Posted August 17, 200816 yr I have a grey hen that I picked up at a bird sale. She got sick, went to the vets got put on Doxy. However she has white runny poo and has had from day one. Went back to the vet did a bunch of test got told it was from being on meds. Put her on a course of probiotic then re introduced fresh veggie and then plain water. All signs of sickness have gone outside of her poo. More tests told it most likely is worms (even though none came up on the slides) treated for worms still no improvement. Was told it was lack of exercise, started letting her have out of the cage time still no improvement. Went back for more test, heading towards the $500 mark for this bird at this stage.... Still nothing, tested for organ failure, nothing, tested for crop mites, nothing, tested for blood disorders, nothing. They finally said they don't know. So now do I take her out of quarantine and put her in with my other birds? The vet says it's not likely that whatever she has will be caught by the other birds but not sure I want to take the risk. Now I am stuck with what do I do with her? I can't keep her seperate from them all for the rest of her life, If she keeps going the way she is going I can't breed from her (my original plan) so now I am stuck. Can anyone think of anything else I could try? Some old breeders trick? I am really to jump up and down in front of her cage and slap her with wet fish if someone recommends it to me! I do have apple cider vinger that I was given (a litre of it from my feed store) but have no clue how much to give etc...
August 17, 200816 yr Raspberry cordial 10% solution for 5 days - i dont have any proof it will do anything good, but it definitely wont do any harm either
August 17, 200816 yr I was going to suggest the raspberry cordial too. At this stage I would try anything to AV.
August 17, 200816 yr I use plain old sulphadim, water and seed to harden up my birds poos when they go down hill?
August 17, 200816 yr Author Going hunting for the cordial tomorrow can anyone recommend a brand? Also what is sulphadim and where do I get it from?
August 17, 200816 yr Does she seem well in general? As with humns and any other animal there will always be some who's bodies seem to work just slightly differently from the rest. If you have tested her for everything possible I'd give her a shot in the aviary, sometimes there is always something not as it should be and it's not anything contagious.
August 17, 200816 yr Author MB she seems fine in good spirts no tail bobbing no discharge, no weezing nothing except for the poo issue. think i will try a few more things and then if still nothing I might take the risk.
August 17, 200816 yr The way I see it if she was flying around in the aviary you wouldn't have even noticed the poop issue, so if she seems perfect otherwise go for it
August 17, 200816 yr Going hunting for the cordial tomorrow can anyone recommend a brand? Also what is sulphadim and where do I get it from? I get Scwheppes pure raspberry cordial.
August 17, 200816 yr Sulphadim can be purchased at most local bird shops and even ordered online The brand I use is Aristopet- Sulphadimidine Moment any of my birds get poopy bum or the "squits" so to put it I put them on a dose of thise to see if it clears up There's some Ebay stores that sell it, but your local shop should carry it Works a treat usually
August 17, 200816 yr Your description of the poos sounds like a possible issue with the pancreas. I had a bird like that. Wheres Sailorwolf and Chrysocome when we need them
August 17, 200816 yr Author according to the vet that is not an issue. i did some internet reserch and came up with liver issues, pancreas issues, bowel issues, internal organ failure, blood issues (low white cell count) and birds that do not eat. She eats fine and has been tested for everything else. I swear i am going to dip this girl in gold she is costing me so much! Oh and here is what her poo looks like.
August 17, 200816 yr The last one has too mush wetness around the poo ...Apple cider 1/2 teaspoon to 500mls of water ...Does the poo smell ? Edited August 17, 200816 yr by Neat
August 17, 200816 yr I am no expert by any means but I would make sure I would use the advice get the poo issues cleared up before I risked putting her in with my other birds, that is my own personal opinion though. What is a few more days to ensure everyone stays healthy. Keep us updated.
August 17, 200816 yr Author Yeah Elly i am going to try everything else before she goes into my avairy. I just wish i knew what to do to fix her!
August 17, 200816 yr As far as I know the white part of the dropping is the urine. I would try the Raspberry cordial they say it’s best to get the highest % of Raspberry I could only find Cascade 25%, but is you can find the Schweppes, that sounds good but wasn’t in the shops here. I put 10mls Apple cider Vinegar to a litre of water. If you want to breed her I would put her in a cabinet with a male you are prepared to risk & see if she can produce young. I have had birds that had some issues that never cleared up, I paired them up & bred a few batches out of them, none of their young were affected…if she wont or can’t breed then it wouldn’t be worth risking putting her with the other birds. After spending that kind of money on her, you would at least hope to get some young out of her...good luck.

August 18, 200816 yr according to the vet that is not an issue. i did some internet reserch and came up with liver issues, pancreas issues, bowel issues, internal organ failure, blood issues (low white cell count) and birds that do not eat. She eats fine and has been tested for everything else. I swear i am going to dip this girl in gold she is costing me so much! Oh and here is what her poo looks like. 2nd picture looks like polyuria - excessive urine output, what is water consumption like? It is not necessarily cause for concern if she has eaten foods with a high water content recently. The urates seem to have a yellowish tinge on my screen, in isolation maybe nothing, but if frequent is worth mentioning to your vet. What is the diet like - are you certain she is eating as much as you think? Could be important as the first picture shows very little stool, mostly urates, which can be a sign of insufficient food intake. Coupled with the second picture if that is not an isolated stool type, my first thoughts are liver issues or diabetes (but I am not a vet, I'm only offering a suggestion based on my experience). I would not recommend placing her with other birds until you have a definitive answer to what is going on inside this bird. Keep us posted.
August 18, 200816 yr Author I added aple cider vinger to her water last night (because I have it on hand) need to pick up cordial and the sulf stuff. Spoke to vet, he can't work it out either so we are going to try 7 days on cider, 7 days fresh, 7 days cordial, 7 days fresh, 7 days sulf, 7 days fresh. Oh course if it clears up with any of them then we will go back to fresh and restart quaratine. The vet does not believe that what she has will be caught by the other birds but I am still (at this point in time) going to stick to quaratine rules. Other then that she was in fine form when she got her fly around the room today. As far as I know the white part of the dropping is the urine. I have a male that I really want to breed her with so if it does not clear up then come the warmer months they might get a breeding cage together. it will be his last round as he is an older cock so as much as I hate saying this it is not like I am risking one of my younger stock who has years ahead. the vet thinks it might be the norm for her but not going to risk it till I have tried ever option availble to me. 2nd picture looks like polyuria - excessive urine output, what is water consumption like? I have monitored her water intake and her feed intake and she does eat well. Most of her died is seed based as I have only been allowed to feed her veggie up untill a few weeks ago and when offered she is not overly intrested in them (not sure she knows what they are) Yes the vet also says that it is excessive urine output and she does drink well which when trying to give her meds is a good thing She has been tested for liver isses and diabetes.
August 18, 200816 yr Oh AV... I hope something works... Keeping him in Quarintine will not only make it eaiser to give meds, it will also enable you to keep a close eye on his food and water consuption, and his poos... Good luck!
August 19, 200816 yr Author He is infact a she Checked today and looks like there are a few rounder poos mixed in with the mush, not sure if it is just me or if the cider vinger stuff is helping. Will keep at it and let you know how she is going.
