I got a second bird to eventually go with the first one that I'm still taming. Must be close to two months now that I've her.

I'm wondering how far apart I need to keep them? Would it be okay if they spent some time in the same room? How do you try to tame two if they aren't together? I mean you can't be in two places at once.

Also my first bird ha a cold or something. She's been doing lots of sneezing and isn't eating as much. I started her on the antibiotics from the pet store. But I don't want her to get the new bird sick. Of course he might be carrying something.

I'll try to get a picture of him up soon. The pet store lady said he's 3 months but I think he might be a little older. Poor kid is terrified.

Thanks,

Summer

Quarantine is minimum 30 days at least 5 metres away from any other birds so another room is better.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but petshops are NOT where you buy medicines for birds or get their illnesses diagnosed. Petshops just want to sell you things and they have no experience in advising about a sick bird. Budgies dont get sniffles, or simple colds as such. They get respiratory problems YES but in a budgie they are generally pretty serious and need a vets diagnosis and treatment. You say she isnt eating as much either. Can you feel her keelbone as feeling sharp ? The keel bone is the chestbone running vertically down the front of her chest. Does she have a poopy bottom ? and what colour is it ?

Has she been in a draught ?

Re the age of your new budgie...petshop people guess or lie about ages on the whole. If its older than you think or had hoped it will take longer to tame.

Shelfie...bird number 1 is alert and chirping. Her bottom is clean. She's active. But she gets these sneeze attacks. Usually it's only 2 or 3 throughout the day. She'll do several sneezes in a row. But yesterday she was having long long fits of them.

She has an appointment at an avian in a week and half. But I thought I'd try the antiboitics in the meantime.

Poor Dave...bird number two. He's so scared. Now he looks like he's getting the runs. I'm guessing it's the stress. He's clinging to the wires in near the bottom of the cage.

I thought it might make him feel better to see another bird lives here. He's upstairs for now and she's downstairs.

No...you can't feel Shelfies chest bone. When I rubbed down her chest to belly she actually stepped up. Progress.

Now the new bird has poop all down it's vent. It's pretty gross. Do you think it's sick? Should I try to take it back? It's finally sitting up on a food cup after I moved it's ladder and startled the poor thing into a flapping frenzy. It' been here 20 hours and is showing no signs of adjusting. I wouldn't worry except for all the runny poop.

your new bird is defintely sick you have 2 options 1. take it to the pet store and have them refund you or 2. take it to an avian vet for treatment.

I agree with everything you have been told. Also find out what the Budgie was feed at the pet store, a change in food can cause some issues sometimes. I would cover the top and three sides of the cageor the next week to let him feel a little more secure. If you can get the same type fo seed the pet store was feeding that would be good. I would also go and let them know what is happening. Try the food and then see if it improves if no I would take the Budgie back. You are better to get one from a breeder 9 times out of 10. Where do you live? Maybe someone has one that they could sell you on the board. I also would make sure bird 1 is 100% before I introduced any new birds into the situation.

I am so sorry you are having issues with your new budgie :)

I agree with all that is said - I just wanted to add that i disagree with returing it to the shop. A petshop pays between $2-$5 for each budgie they receive. There is no way they would spend any money getting the budgie better and i feel they would either resell it (untreated) or kill it :o

I know i am being over sensitive but it breaks my heart when pets hops don't care treat their pets as nothing more than stock

I called the pet store and they said I could bring the bird back and they would treat it. I brought it back but when I got there the clerk didn't believe me about him being sick. He had never stopped panting. They took him back but put him back in the cage with the others. He looked so relieved. I'm worried for him though because I really do believe he was sick. I got another bird that I had watched for a long time the day before who appeared very healthy. I disinfected the cage and thoroughly rinsed it. When I put the new new bird in the cage I saw they put him in the same little carry box that sick bird was in with all the diarrhea. Arrgh. I hope he doesn't get it now.

This bird is much stronger. Clean vent (so far) and he's alert and got on a perch. He did some panting and shaking but nothing like the sick bird.

I'm afraid "Liv" was right. I had no idea that they got the birds so cheap. I'm not going to frequent this store anymore because I really don't like how they treated the poor little guy.

Thanks for your input. I never should have gone to this place in the first place. It was against my better judgement.

The reality is we can not save them all.

I wish you all the best with your new budgie :)

I look forward to hearing all the details about him/her

Stress may have cause the 1st new bird to go green?

Hope all goes well with the next ;)

Liv, I agree with you on this but I was just giving her what options she had, I don't believe pet shops do good for any budgie healthy or sick ;) and in all realthy (this is not to make you feel bad) I probably would have just asked for a refund and not exchanged. If one is sick they have all probably been together he may be sick too but maybe not. I would not give my business to an establishment like this. This is only my opinion though.
