She doesn't look like all my other budgies. Her beak looks different and her shoulders look broader with a more defined breast area???? If she is not the same kind of budgie as Raine what does this mean for their babies?????????
August 16, 200816 yr Congratulations on your first egg. I'm sure you are going to get some very pretty babies. I really love Raine's colour. :budgiedance:
August 16, 200816 yr There is only one species of budgie Humans have messed with the original budgie lots for it to become our pet type and show type birds so they do tend to vary alot in size and shape. It's nothing to worry about :budgiedance: The reason for colour difference in her beak is due to her feather colouring.

I really love Raine's colour. :budgiedance: I'm told he's a greywing sky blue split to recessive pied and she is a recessive pied... I hope that's a good combo? I can't wait to see the babies... keep your fingers crossed for me this is my first clutch on my own.
August 16, 200816 yr He is also yellowface. Tell me is your hen blue around the vent? She may also be a yellow face blue bird if she is. If not you will get all greens unless she is split blue

I thought there might be a difference and maybe she was different then my others... ?? She looks nothing like any of my other keets. I must have sounded really stupid huh. :budgiedance:
August 16, 200816 yr Not stupid, youaren't to know, especially if you don't live in either of those countries. Englih is a term used by some people to mean show type :budgiedance:
August 16, 200816 yr Author He is also yellowface. Tell me is your hen blue around the vent? She may also be a yellow face blue bird if she is. If not you will get all greens unless she is split blue Yes, YF2 I'm told. As for the hen, I don't think there is any blue around her vent. It is mainly green like her belly with downy white feathers around the very opening... I think. She's now nesting on her NEW EGG :budgiedance: so I can't really disturb her to check. If I find out otherwise or have a better picture I'll let you know and then maybe you can tell better. I'd love to get some blue from them if the green is dom and that's what we get, i'm sure they will stil be nice looking birds.
August 16, 200816 yr Green is dominant so if she is green and not blue (with the YF2 turning her feathers green) then unless he is split all the bubs ill be green split blue :budgiedance: I'm sure they'll still be really pretty though

Or will they all be normal or pied greens?
August 16, 200816 yr Yep you culd get yellow faces, but i think greywing needs a gene for each parent. If the chicks are green though you won't be able to tell which ones are carrying yellowface.
August 16, 200816 yr Congrats on your egg, I have a budgie exactly like your Raine. His name is Tealan, He's almost identical. Edited August 16, 200816 yr by maesie spelling
August 19, 200816 yr Author okay, I have 3 eggs now ( ), but I have a question. I know that it takes about 18 days for the eggs to hatch and most people say start counting those days after the second or third egg she has laid and starts sitting on them, but..... my hen has sat on her eggs from day one. She does not come out of her nest at all since she laid the first egg except to breed with her mate. So my question is should I expect these eggs to start hatching about 18 days from the first eggs or still go off the second or third egg's date???? Let me know thanks. http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n400/ch...5a/RSCN4124.jpg Chrissy, your photo has been turned into a link again. Please resize your photos before posting them. August 19, 200816 yr Author I know and while I wait all I do is spend money on them which I'm serposed to save if they do have chicks dammit I hear you there. It gets costly. I went from one parakeet as a gift to 10 keets. I went from one 18" cage to a 6' aviary. By the time you add up the cost of the birds, the food, the dishes, nesting boxes, toys, etc.... a $20 bird turned in to hundreds of dollars. But I'm pasionate about them. I enjoy learning their life process, etc... Edited August 20, 200816 yr by maesie spelling

August 20, 200816 yr Congrats on the Eggs - Remember once the babies start hatching to add nesting materials in there
August 20, 200816 yr Author Congrats on the Eggs - Remember once the babies start hatching to add nesting materials in there :hap: Neat when will they start hatching? (18 days from the first egg since she started setting right away?) Also, I thought keets don't like nesting material? What does the material do for the babies?
August 20, 200816 yr It's 18ish days from when then hen sits tight on the eggs, which is not always from the laying of the first one. The nesting material, which lots of people use untreated wood shavings, is to absorb the chicks poo. It's amazing how much the chicks poo, and by having something in there to soak it up, makes cleaning a breeze. Take the chick out and put them in a dish/container. Remove wood shavings, replace with fresh ones and then replace chicks.

When examining the eggs this morning I noticed that one of my eggs has a "pressure crack" in it. It looks like a small indentation crack as if one of the other eggs was rolled into it or something???? If this egg is fertile will this egg have any chance of hatching or should I just remove it now????????????/ :hap:

If so throw it away. When a crack is new you can repair an egg with glue and spare eggshell but you stand a risk that the egg then becomes too tough for a chick to hatch out of later on. Other methods to repair an egg is liquid paper. But if you see the crack going all the way through tomorrow it is too late and you must throw the egg away. The thing is cracked eggs in a nest break open and then the hen gets the egg stuck to her. It can stick to other good eggs and you have all kinds if issues.

When checking the eggs this morning with the flashlight, all seem to have a red mass in it but I couldn't see veins... may need to be in a darker room or wait until tomorrow night. I'll check the crack, if it is not all the way through can I just leave it alone or should it be patched no matter what ? I watch the video clips posted on one of the other posts about candling eggs and I couldn't tell if they were fertile or not. If I see a "spot" does that mean they are fertile even if I don't see the viens?????
