I know not to breed under 12 months but is it better to give the hen an extra couple of months to be on the safe side?

Depends on the maturity of the hen or how eager and ready she is to breed. If you are sure she is 12 months and in condition and ready to go...put her down to breed

Yep - Agree too, But I will admit that I breed a hen that was 10 months old by accident
