Posted March 8, 200520 yr Having recovered from his first trip to the vets and taken his medicine dilligently all seemed well. He was still a bit tatty but assumed he was moulting. However, late this afternoon, I noticed that he is opening his beak to breathe and his tail seems to be bobbing a bit. He is warm and seems to be eating normally. Should I take him to the vets again??? Sooooz Edited March 8, 200520 yr by Suzy R Sopham
March 8, 200520 yr It sounds like the bird definitely needs to see the vet again. At the very least, call the vet and tell him/her what's going on. I'm pretty sure they'll tell you to bring the little budgie in.
March 8, 200520 yr yes i would definitely take him to a vet. some tail bobbing is normal but not with an open mouth. also, you can check to see if his feet are very cold, sometimes they are cool, but look for them being a little colder than usual, either that or very hot feet. getting a bird to step on your finger is the easiest way to check your birds core body temperature without having to go to a specialist vet. if he seems cold - cold feet , fluffed feathers put a blanket over 3 sides of his cage until you can get them to a vet this way you can observe if his breathing gets worse whilst still keeping him warm.
March 9, 200520 yr If the birds tail is points to the ground instead of straight with body line. This is an indication that the bird is sick it?s always best to keep the bird warm and in a quite place when there sick. But to be on the safe side I would take him to the vet. With my birds I have a sick cage which is a wooden box with a light in it and an old blanket. I have used it and always had success with this formula. But the best place is a vet as they know what is wrong and usually can fix it with some antibiotics and a little TLC.
March 10, 200520 yr Well! Now I don't know what to think! I couldn't get an appointment with the avian specialist vet until Friday evening (tomorrow) but since then, he has been perfectly normal. To be on the safe side I have given him a couple of doses of antibiotics I had left from the last trip to the vets. Waiting to see how he his tomorrow before I cancel the appointment. March 14, 200520 yr Since I first posted this, he has been bright as a button! We didn't go to the vets in the end but I am still keeping an eye on him. Thanks all for your advice Soooz
March 14, 200520 yr Since I first posted this, he has been bright as a button! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Glad to hear he's doing better! Budgies are so odd like that sometimes. I thought Piper was very ill when I first got her and right as we planned to get her to the vet she perked up too. It really is scary though because when they show signs of illness you know they're REALLY feeling bad. They know just how to make an owner paranoid! -Terri
