Posted August 11, 200816 yr Howdy I need some opinions please! Coco (my 8 1/2 month old boy) had early signs of scaly face showing so I treated using a parafin oil/benzone solution that I bought from a pet store. After I got back from Tassie, it was looking worse rather than better, so last Friday we took him to an Avian Vet. The Avian Vet treated him with Ivermectin to the beak. He gave Coco two drops and said to come back in 7-10 days for a second treatment. I have never heard of this being given to the beak, and before I take him back (bearing in mind that the first visit cost me $65.00) I wanted to check if this is okay to do? His droppings for a while now have also been quite light, then go dark and are always changing, although his diet stays reasonably the same. The Vet was not fussed about it, and said to only be concerned if they are long and skinny. Does this seem right? I thought that they were meant to be dark green/black. The Avian vet I went to was highly recommended by somebody on this forum, but I came out a little confused! Is what he is doing/saying seem right?
August 11, 200816 yr I have never heard of ivermectin being applied to the beak ....I use the spot on applied to the back of the neck just once. Once has always been enough. Dont know why the "new way" is applied to the beak
August 11, 200816 yr I would think, because he put it on the beak, that it was ivermectin oral & not spot on. Plus he used 2 drops. If it clears it up I don't think you need to go back,if it dosent. Try the spot on ivermectin.
August 11, 200816 yr I have heard of Ivermectin oral too. This vet (Dr Pin) seems to be one who does things differently to most vets - He sounds very talented and I will try him out next time one of mine get sick.
August 11, 200816 yr The scaley face issue was addressed but the poop he should have done a gram smear did he do that?
August 11, 200816 yr Like others have said it was probably oral Ivermectin, not spot on, I have read where they give one drop through the beak with Gouldian finches for air sac mites. I think Ivermectin has quite a long residue period, using the spot on I have never needed to repeat the dose so close, I would just keep a close eye on it, if it’s working the scaly mites should clear up pretty quick.
August 11, 200816 yr Totally agree there the oral does compared to the spot on dose - My avain vet does the oral, But i buy the spot on one ...
August 11, 200816 yr Author Thanks everybody for your replies . He didn't appear to be careless, and I have no reason to doubt him, I had just never heard of it being given orally and wanted to make sure that it is okay. Do you think I need to get the second treatment? As for the poops, I made sure that he knew I was concerned about them, but he didn't seem interested in doing a test or anything and I felt silly for pushing something that a qualified Avian vet didn't think there was a problem with.
