Posted August 10, 200816 yr Hi my two budgie's caught scaly face and I used olive oil to treat it as its only the start of it, and I was wondering how long will I have to treat them for as it took me 2 hours to catch me female with small break for her to catch her breath.
August 10, 200816 yr you need to aply the oil twice a day for about 3-5 days, then repeat in about 2 weeks to kill any hatching eggs. Are you using a net to catch your birds? 2 hours would be very stressful for your poor hen

August 11, 200816 yr Call your local vet they normally have ivermectin they can make up a bottle for about $10 it's just one drop to the back of the neck every three months. However if they have it bad then one drop every week for three weeks and isolate them from the rest of your flock. Sometimes if you have a good pet store near you they might have some and you can bring the bird in and they will treat but that is ONLY if they are a good one and know what you are talking about. Otherwise you could also call any breeders that you know in your area, I was going to offer to send you some but I don't think they will let me

August 11, 200816 yr Not the worse case I have seen but yes getting bad. One drop should do. Do you have a vet near you that will make you up a bottle? Some pet shops might sell it over here you can get it in produce/feed stores as well. Just make sure you don't give them to much, make sure you have an eye dropper and one drop under the feathers on the back on the head.

It acualy looks better now then when I took those pictures, On the back of the neck or head? and could this be the reson she wont go into breeding condition? Edited August 11, 200816 yr by Jodie
August 11, 200816 yr I sort of aim for just above their "shoulder blades" don't want it to him up high enough that they can't reach around and preen the area. I believe that a bird can breed with SM but I would not personally. Also it might be why her cere does not show the change to breeding condition.
August 11, 200816 yr breeding with budgies infected with the mites will pass it to the babies who will then develop it as adults I would advise you invest in a net - doesn't have to be an expensive bird one - i use a toy butterfly net that came with my kids bug play set you could probably get one from a bargain store Your clever at making thigs - you could probably make one with some coat hanger wire, some sheer curtain material and some dowel wood for the handle Edited August 11, 200816 yr by **Liv**

August 11, 200816 yr Author Its the second day of treating them and george seems to enjoy the atention now and dosent struggle when i hold him he also likes to taste the oil is that safe? Lumina still puts up a fight but I put oil on her perches so she gets it on her still but were getting there Ill send you pictures of them tommorow
August 11, 200816 yr Jodie rub some oil into their legs also, up as high as you can, as the mite can live in the scales there also. A little olive oil shouldn’t be harmful.

August 11, 200816 yr It wont be healing yet as the mites will still be dying. Once they are dead, the mess left by the mites will fall off over the next few weeks
August 15, 200816 yr you could probably make one with some coat hanger wire, some sheer curtain material and some dowel wood for the handle That is how I made ours. It was very easy to make but guess what? So far the hardest bird to catch took about 15 minutes so I made the net after that and we have never used it at all so I can't tell if I made a good net or not
August 15, 200816 yr Also change your perches too and treat any other birds that was in with them ... treat all areas of the birds that aren't covered with feathers
