Barney and Lady just mated in the aviary!! :fear

 

And they are not a pair that i have planned for. - they could probably have pretty babies though :(

Do I take Lady and all my other hens out of the aviary to stop unplanned hanky panky? or will it be okay; are they just practicing with no sperm/eggs because there are no boxes?

 

I am hoping to have them all in cabinets at the beginning of September.

Not the pairing you want. Doesnt mean no sperm just the no eggs without nestboxes. Might pay to seperate :fear

I have been watching them and i think i will reshuffle my pairs as Barney is a brilliant dad, and a calm bird in general so personality wise, he would probably do Lady a world of good considering her scatterbrained temperament and unknown breeding history. :(

 

He might set her up for good breeding (with better cocks) in the future :D

Always the way liv, the pairs you don't want to breed, breed - They will make nice babies :D :D

You don't necessarily have to take them out of the aviary permanently but you should seperate each hen for a couple of weeks before pairing them to ensure there are no unplanned matings.

haha. They are still at it - I will let them stay together as they are very bonded now (not only at the rump) :huh: he is preening her and chatting her up and she is accepting. It's the first time i have seen her with a male so lets hope she calms down and becomes a good mum too :o
