October 10, 200816 yr I agree, they are seeds. You may find the wood shaving will stay this time round. I usually find before and during egg laying, all the shavings are emptied... but once the chicks arrive the hen is to busy to worry about getting rid of them. Which is great for us as it makes cleaning much easier!
October 11, 200816 yr Author THanks very much Maesie. I Put a ring on the eldest chick today(6 days old) and it fell off. It must be in the shavings somewhere, Iwill just try put a new one on in a few days. His legs have not grown enough yet, his toenails are still pink and very fragile.

Dont go off the age for ringing Pearce....use the method I described which is to take the little back toe and hold it back along the leg and if it reaches the joint in the leg then its ready to ring the chick.
October 11, 200816 yr Author I tried your method KAZ. The problem is that all 4 toes are exactly the same length and instead of 3 facing forward and 1 facing back, One is facing north, one is facing south, one is facing west and one is facing east. The leg is not developed enough to be rung yet. ThANKS
October 11, 200816 yr Author Here are some bad quality pictures I took this afternoon when I cleaned the nest box out. As you can see the crop milk is not pure white/yellow but I am not worried, the birds are still alive so it means they are being fed.
October 11, 200816 yr Crop milk is only for the first couple of days, so the colour of FOOD in the babies crop is exactly right
October 12, 200816 yr Author Summer's 4th baby hatched from the egg today and has been fed. All others have been fed also. The eldest has his eyes open but I am not sure if he can see.. it says that they can see at roughly 9 days old and he is not 9 days yet. Neons second baby hatched today and has been fed also. All is going great!
October 12, 200816 yr Awesome Pearce... it's fun isn't it... just got to learn to relax and let it happen. It still pays to be prepared... just don't over think things
October 12, 200816 yr Author Thank you all. I do tend to over worry things but I would rather be prepared if somthing bad happens. Does anyone here use split plastic rings of their babies? Are they strong enough? Can the birds break them off? How does the ring hold together? Thanks very much.

Great if you just want to recognise family groups or for showing they are split recessive or whatever. They do last a long long time. So use them with confidence
October 12, 200816 yr I use them as KAZ says... to tell the difference between clutches, and more recently, to tell the difference between my identical opalines . I use metal split rings and they are still on the ones I ringed over two years ago. Depending on the age, they may or may not try and bite them... but after a little while, they get over them and forget they were ever there.
October 13, 200816 yr Author HI Thanks for all the help. I went to a few petshops today just to see if they had the rings. One shop had them but tried to get me to buy finch rings, he said "Finch and budgies have the same leg width so these rings will be fine" I am going to ring up a friend and see if he has any. Last sunday I put iverctmin spoton on the back of a few of my birds necks. They still have scaly face and I am just wondering if I should give another dose or just wait? How long does it usually take to cure the problem. Thanks very much
October 13, 200816 yr Stop fretting about the scaly face meds. I told you two weeks you will see results.
October 13, 200816 yr I am not fretting...Sorry You dont need to be sorry. BUT you are expecting too much too soon. All will be well. You used the right meds at the right time at the right dose. You will be pleased with the results. Your breeding is going so well, and the chicks look fantastic
October 13, 200816 yr Author I always worry about things way to much. It is just the way I am I guess. I will stop asking so many questions.
October 13, 200816 yr I always worry about things way to much. It is just the way I am I guess.I will stop asking so many questions. No need to stop asking questions... just try to relax a little . You'll spend the whole time worrying and before you know it the chicks will be all grown up!
October 13, 200816 yr never stop asking questions I can understand your axiousness, its to be expected. but unfortunatley not everything is as fast as we would like  Good luck with the breeding!
