September 5, 200816 yr Author I know I can ask on here but I want to learn for myself aswell so I can help others... Thanks
September 5, 200816 yr Author Hi Updates: Grunt has laid 1 egg :hap: Beauty and beasts eggs are due to hatch in 2 days, they are all fertile. :hap: A new pair has been added to the breeding world.. Thunder: Thunder is a grey green normal, 2006 bred. Neon: Neon is a skyblue normal, 2007 bred. Can anyone notice the way thunder sits, is it splayed legs or can it be somthing else? Can you fix splayed legs in adult budgies? My friend had 2 clutches from thunder and she did everything right, so I am guessing this is a problem that she can deal with and it doesnt bother her.. Thanks.
September 5, 200816 yr I noticed the way she sits too .. Splayes legss can only be fixed when they are babies IF CAUGHT early
September 6, 200816 yr Author Update: I candled beauty's eggs today (cockatiel) and all I could see was a dark shade on one side of the egg and a small clear shade on the other side. I think that means that the baby is dead in its shell... I only candled one egg because I do not want to disturb them. The first egg was laid 16 days ago so if they are fertile.. they are due to hatch this weekend. Here is a picture I drew in paint. All other budgies going very well. I tried making seed bells today and I failed miserably. The honey would not hold the seed together and I made one big mess. Thanks
September 9, 200816 yr Author Hello all. Grunt has now laid 3 eggs but I am concerned. They are pinkish coloured eggs which leads me to beleive they are infertile. She never incubates them either, she goes in and lays the eggs then goes back out with sumo. Will she start incubating after the 4th egg or is she just not a good mother? Do pinkish eggs mean infertile? Any tips or advice would be great. Thanks
September 9, 200816 yr Often a hen won't sit on her eggs until she has laid a few, so don't stress about that. More than likely, she will begin sitting soon! As to the colour of the eggs... I'm pretty sure that's normal. As she hasn't started incubating them yet, nothing is happening. Once she starts, the eggs will change as the chicks develop.
September 9, 200816 yr Author Thanks very much maesie. That is good to hear. I was just worried that the chicks inside the eggs would die over night if they werent incubated.
September 9, 200816 yr Hey Pearce, congrats on the eggs mate! I cant wait to see the babies will look like!! One of my hens would lay on day one sleep outside for the next couple of nights and pop in to lay the second and then would confine herself to the box after she laid the third, so sont worry to mush about it, just think of the opportunity it provides the male to throw the leg over first thing in the morning!
September 10, 200816 yr Author Update: Grunt now has 3 eggs and another is due tomorow. Their are some droppings on the eggs which leads me to beleive she is having trouble passing it? They get plenty of calcium so I am not sure what the problem could be their... any ideas?? If a normal grey female budgie had chicks with a normal cobalt male what would the outcomes be? I may have asked this before but I honestly forget. Here is what I think: Grey is dominant over blue so the chicks would be all grey? Am I right? Thanks P.S: Is their a way to tell if your budgie is split for another colour? example: If I have a grey green bird and it is split with blue will I be able to tell he is split blue?" September 11, 200816 yr Author Hi Grunt has laid 4 eggs now but only incubates during the day... Can chicks in the eggs survive if they are only incubated during the day? I do not know why she doesnt sit on them at night. No other eggs from any other pairs yet, I think I might put them back in the avairy because it has been 4 weeks.

How sure are you that she isnt sitting at night ? What might be happening also is that she hasnt begun to incubate yet and you are only seeing her in there while she is laying more eggs.
September 12, 200816 yr Author HI Last night I had the flu so I was up all night. Every hour or so I went to check on the birds and gruntis sleeping outside with sumo. She incubates during the day a little bit. She goes in and lays the egg then comes out and mates with sumo countless times. I always thought that they incubated after the 2nd egg was laid, is it possible that these 4 eggs could still be alive if she hasnt incubated much? The oldest is 8 days old and I thought if she wasnt incubating it would not survive.. Thanks very much

It isnt written in stone that they sit after egg three anyway. Some wait till they have finished laying. When she is laying her eggs you are thinking she is incubating but she isnt yet.
September 12, 200816 yr Author Hi That is good news then. I thought that the first second and third egg would have died by the time she starts incubating. "When the hen starts to lay eggs, she will lay an egg every other day. A clutch of eggs is normally anywhere from 4 to 6 eggs, but sometimes 8 or more. A new hen may not start to brood the eggs until the second or even third egg is laid" I got that from a website and I couldnt find any information saying otherwise so I just thought they would be dead by now. Sorry. Thanks very much Edited September 12, 200816 yr by pearce
September 12, 200816 yr Author Thank you. Mine are crossed to. Here are some pictures of my female quail on eggs, I dont know if they are fertile or not. I find that with my quails, they lay eggs anywhere then when they have enough they push them all into one big pile. Its really cool.
September 12, 200816 yr I find that with my quails, they lay eggs anywhere then when they have enough they push them all into one big pile. Its really cool. Yeah, ours do that too...eggs everywhere until they are ready to incubate them. Ours usually have 8 as their ideal number
September 12, 200816 yr Author Hi I've asked alot of questions today but I just have one more. Grunt (The female on eggs) is starting to have some different droppings to what I usually see. They are either grey and slim with a wet patch around or big piles of it. I am sorry if this grosses anyone out. I have 2 pictures that arent the best but they show the big piles of it. Should I take her to the vet? Or is it just because she has layed eggs that the droppings are grey and wet? Thanks for your time. P.S: One more question.. I'm just wondering when you all feed your birds? I feed mine at 4 pm and I am just wondering if that is a good time? Is morning better or afternoon? Sorry for all the questions Edited September 12, 200816 yr by pearce
September 12, 200816 yr Big horrible looking poops are normal for egglaying birds. My birds I feed early morning and at around 4pm like you. Thats their feeding times. If yours have food for the morning then feeding them in the early afternoon like you are is fine.
September 12, 200816 yr yep agree with Kaz, them big nasty looking poops normal for a hen laying, my 2 are dropping them and they are huge :rip: I check in the morning that they have enough for the rest of the day and then put their veggies in with it (mine wont eat veggies unless they are in their regular seed dish, then in the afternoon about 4 I go empty them all and put in fresh seed for their evening pig fest I have a question though, it looks like you have seed on the bottom of your cage, was just wondering why and does anybody else do this? (only asking in case it is something that I should think about doing)
September 12, 200816 yr Author The seed falls through the grate because my budgies eat like pigs. They dig down deep in the dish and throw away all the other seed. Seed on the ground like that would probably attract rodents. I clean the trays out every 4 days. The tray is clean now. P.S: You probably already know this but you can get those tube feeders which you fill with seed and attach it to the side of the cage. I do not use these as I have the same problem with everyone I have, The seed gets jammed or clogged up and the budgies starve. P.S: Good luck with your bird breeding :rip: Thanks for the help. September 12, 200816 yr AHHHHH cool sorry (I have heard of some breeders doing this but I wasn't sure and it sounds abit gross to me what with the poop and all :rip: ) lucky for me I seem to have budgies with manners, there is very little seed outside of their dish.
September 13, 200816 yr Author Hello Could someone have a look at sunnys picture and tell me if she has eggs in her stomach or not, if not I am releasing her and bull back into the avairy as they have been in the breeding cage for 4 1/5 weeks now... Thanks
September 13, 200816 yr hey Pearce, you can't actually tell if a budgie is going to lay agg till just before she does and even then it is not aways visable, the things you can look for are 1, she is spending heaps of time in the nest box "getting it ready" 2, she has really large and I mean HUGE droppings like the ones in the pics you posted the other day 3, she may get what is called "egg bum" where her vent area looks really swollen, but like I said it is not always easy to see. I was nearly at the point of taking out Betty and Jordan, both had been in the cabinate for about 5 weeks or more, they were showing all these signs, Kaz and a few others told me to leave them a little longer and sure enough 3 days later they both started laying. Kaz did mention to someone else that you can try covering the box hole for a few days, if she isn't showing all these signs I would try that first cause she looks like she is in condition. Sometimes it can take longer than expected especially with cabinate breeding where the pairs aren't always bonded first, make sure they have a really stable perch aswell cause even a slightly wobbly one will make it hard for them to mate properly. You can also try puttng some nesting material in the box (I used bits of scrunched up newspaper), she will probably throw this out but it can make her get her into the nest mood. Hope this helps Good luck
September 13, 200816 yr Author HI Charlie2479 The droppings are the normal size. She either only goes in the nest box when I walk past as if she is hiding from us or she and bull are in their together doing somthing. This is the only pair of budgies I havent seen mate yet. She is bonded very well with bull but I'm not sure, maybe they just dont feel like it. I am worried if I take them out she will start laying on the ground in the avairy, It is just my luck. Or if I leave them in their to long they will die because they get no excersise... I tried covering the hole but she ate right through the paper the minute I put it in their. The perches are firm and they do not wobble. Their is shavings in the nest box but she has removed most of them or ate them. Your post did help me thank you very much for it Update on grunt and sumo: Grunt is incubating alot more during the day but still not at night. She has layed 5 eggs now and I candled them as advised. I think they are infertile but I will try explain what the eggs look like. They are clear with a dot on one side with little lines coming from it. I was told this means the chick is in their but it is dead They probably froze over night. Thanks all.
