January 1, 200916 yr Author Hi. Are the birds suffering do you think? They eat and drink perfectlyfine but they have limited amounts of feathers, always have droppings on their bottom, have long beaks. What would you personally do if you had 2 birds like this?
January 1, 200916 yr What would you personally do if you had 2 birds like this? Personally, I would take them to a vet and if there is nothing for them to be treated, i would have them put them to sleep  They might be okay now, but come winter they will suffer
January 1, 200916 yr Author okay thankyou LIV Their eldest sister was like these 2 but she is fine now, she is in the avairy mixing. I will take them to a vet and see if he thinks they will improve.

I have had such birds...they dont live happy lives.
January 2, 200916 yr if i were you pearce i would sell the bird who is having these chicks as a pet or keep it but not breed again (and tell them she or he is no good to breed with )and same with the sister that's gotten better if you are not sure which side this is coming from then test breed with a bird you know to have healthy chicks and then if the same thing occurs you will know who is the carrier their are many reasons this can happen but french molt does look like your prob their is a lot of ideas and reasons floating around but personally i believe it all comes down to inter breed birds (i am not referring to birds being back breed or line breed although if you don't know the proper procedures it can be a problem then)french molt can jump generations so don't be hasty in believing which bird is the cause also the fact that you have been having big problems with mite may be a reason as mite can give a similar result as french molt if the infestation is bad i know a lot of people will not agree with what i say but mate i have never had a case of it in my whole breeding experiences through out my life but in saying this see it in a lot of peoples aviaries some people just say that the mother plucked it when it is young DO NOT BE FOOLED if a bird has fluffy feather growth then it carries the french molt gene or some may argue its a virus what ever it is it is not nice and all french molt birds should in my view be anethesized as soon as signs show and the parent birds put out as retired never to be breed again as unless you know you bird is going to be a pet only to many people ignore the warning and breed regardless as not all the chicks seem to be affected i think this is wrong how are our birds going to get better if people have this attitude virus or genetic it is a carried problem passed on to not always all the young and birds who have not been affected can still pass it on even if it passes a few generations this is where the biggest problem lies get rid of your mite and if this problem still occurs then work out who is your carrier but my advice i wouldn't breed or let anyone else breed from any of the birds from any affected clutch EVER ..... ps i really admire that you are sharing issues that most people would be to scared to admit well done its the only way to learn and experience it all sorry you have started with such a bad experience it will all be worth it in the end you have some nice birds their remember this is only my opinion only what i myself would do would do but of course vet first  stupid me Edited January 2, 200916 yr by KAZ
January 2, 200916 yr Author Thanks Genericblue. I will keep the parents in the avairy and will not breed with them anymore.
January 3, 200916 yr well peirce i wish you luck in the future with your birds i will keep following your progres did you take chicks to vet what was their opinion french molt or might afected im just currious to know ?
January 3, 200916 yr Author I took babies to the vet this morning. He said the green baby is french moult and has only a 5% chance of growing all his feathers back. The blue one is french moult also and has a 95% chance of growing feathersback. He also trimmed their beaks. Edited January 3, 200916 yr by pearce

Thanks. no you probbly wouldnt it was a pretty last rezort one lol i was going to sugest that mabe you should cut your losses get ride of all cages (breeding ones ) place birds all in a spankers brand new cage all freshly demited of course then clean your aviry from top to toe with a high grade disinfectant scrub scrub scrub all wire and floor to be cleaned if concret and dug out and replaced if dirt based then let it sit for a good week then spray with the stuff kaz and the others sugested you get all over let sit for till dry then when you are sure all birds are free from the mite release into freshly clean aviry then eithe make or buy fresh nestboxes and breeding cage as mite can hatch again at latter date if not delt with causing the same drama over i in your situation would burn any wooden anything perches the lot to make certain the little buggers did not have a chance to come back but i am a very off the planet type person when it comes to drematic ways of dealing with things like that lol once my ginni pigs had mite and i trancmited it to a pair of breeding birds (one or two bugs lol)i saw them crawl off my hand when i checked on the hen i throw out the whole box washed the eggs as they were due to hatch and cleaned the whole cage i went got new cage and box place birds after spraying them away from all others washed all my pigs and keeped them inside in the bath for a week while i dround their cages in disinfectent and left to dry in sun i washed them three times over just incase over that week before placing them back ivomectomed yes the pigs but after that decided birds and pigs not a good combo as to time consuming i have no pigs now so no risk of cross comtamination drastic but afective awnser to problem i also would let birds have a brake till i was sure that their is no sighn of mite after 6 months then comence with my breeding but like i say thats me i dont think anyone else would do this
January 3, 200916 yr Author I would do that if the mites come back and I cannot get rid of them. Thankyou very much.
January 3, 200916 yr I would do that if the mites come back and I cannot get rid of them. Thankyou very much. it is a drastic meashure to take but drastic mesures for drastic times i always say

We have whole topics on these drinkers and can be found using the search function
January 4, 200916 yr Budgies have to be trained to use them. don't just change the drinkers over. Let them have both for a while until they get used to using the ball ones. Be careful too as they can get clogged if seed get in them.
January 4, 200916 yr Author Hi I have made a new website, it is not very good but it does the job. I posted it in the advertise a website section but it does not show up so I dont know whats wrong with that. Take a look if you want. http://pf-budgerigars.webs.com/index.htm
January 4, 200916 yr Author Hi Does anyone know where I could get a show cage and how much they are worth.
January 4, 200916 yr you should be able to get a show cage from a budgie club - most clubs have some one who makes them up Oh and they are about $30 for a kit and $50 made up (they are a headache to make  I am doing on now and doing my head in because they have to be PERFECT!!! :laughter: ) Edited January 4, 200916 yr by **Liv**
