December 19, 200816 yr Author okay Thankyou very much KAZ. This will be the last round of breeding for all birds until mid next year, its getting to hot for them at the moment. Edited December 19, 200816 yr by pearce
December 20, 200816 yr Author Hi all I have new drinkers but they are alot different to the ones The birds are used to. The ones the birds are used to are just big open water drinkers and the new ones are like gravity feeders. I'm just wondering how I would go about introducing the new ones? Will the birds know how to use them? I dont want them dieing of dehydration. Thankyou.

December 20, 200816 yr That being said... you could always introduce the new ones with the old ones still there... and over time remove the old ones (If that will ease your mind )
December 20, 200816 yr Author okay Thats excellent thankyou KAZ Update:The cockatiel babies are doing very well. This time I have 1 black with yellowface, 1 fully black and 1 white with yellowface. This will be the last time the cockatiels breed till mid next year. budgie babies are all doing well and starting to wander around the nest box. I have added millet spray and seed as their bedding. The birds are all in the new breeding room now and I'm suprised how much breeze they get, more than what they had under the patio. I bought this insulation its about 1 inch thick and its better than polystyrene because it can get wet. It is working very well and keeping the avairy cool. That being said... you could always introduce the new ones with the old ones still there... and over time remove the old ones (If that will ease your mind )okay Maesie because these new ones only sit about an inch in the breeding cage, the rest of the tube is on the outside. Thanks all Edited December 20, 200816 yr by pearce
December 20, 200816 yr I must add... I am very impressed with your attitude and commitment Pearce... you ask lots of questions and ALWAYS listen to advice... Hats off to you. Your birds have an awesome owner!
December 20, 200816 yr Author Thankyou very much Maesie. I listen to all opinions and take everything onboard. I have nest boxes with sliding doors that you can take on and off. Now I have made some very small 3 mm square bird wire into sliding doors that I can use instead of the wooden ones. This way the babies can get lots of breeze during the day and they can see outside. At night they will be switched to wooden ones to keep the nest box warm. Also, with hulled oats, do the birds crack them and take the insides like sunflower seeds or do they eat the entire seed? Thanks all.
December 20, 200816 yr Good idea with the mesh, just make sure they don't get to cold... the other option if you find they are getting to cold is KAZ's clear perspex doors that she has put on some of her nest boxes in the past... I can't find the post but I'm sure it was Kaz that did it...
December 20, 200816 yr Author I got the idea from KAZ's post and I to have no idea where it is now. Clear perspex doesnt let any air through does it? Thanks
December 20, 200816 yr nope it wouldn't... unless you drilled small holes in the top of it... that way you could determine just how much air came into the nestbox. :thankyou: Just a suggestion...
December 20, 200816 yr Author Hi all The first egg hatched from sumo and bullets nest today, the chick looks quite small and It hatched 2 days early. What are the chances of this baby surviving? It has been fed and is being incubated.
December 20, 200816 yr Is there any yolk outside the body or any yellow visible under the skin of the abdomen?
December 20, 200816 yr Author Hi **liv** Their is no yolk in the eggshell or under the skin on his abdomen, none outside the body either. Should I take a picture of the baby next to a 5 cent piece so someone can tell me if he is to small to survive or not?
December 20, 200816 yr If there is no visible sign of yolk or yellow belly (yolk in the abdomen) then the baby is not premature
December 20, 200816 yr Author okay I thought that the baby eats the yolk before breaking out of the shell, if this was the case wouldnt it mean that yolk would be in its abdomen? Here is a picture. That is excellent that he is not immature. Thankyou very much **Liv**
December 20, 200816 yr I got the idea from KAZ's post and I to have no idea where it is now. Clear perspex doesnt let any air through does it? Thanks The glass ( not perspex ) I use is for hens that pluck and also for nestboxes I want to look in and not disturb the hen. I also do mesh door for summer breeding
December 20, 200816 yr Author okay Thankyou KAZ and **liv** KAZ, Can you explain how perspex helps with hens plucking babies? Thankyou all.
December 20, 200816 yr okay Thankyou KAZ and **liv** KAZ, Can you explain how perspex helps with hens plucking babies? Thankyou all. The hen feels more vulnerable in the nest so she goes in to feed and doesnt spend a lot of time in there. Less time means she doesnt get as bored and less inclined to pluck.
