December 10, 200816 yr Author I fed them at 9 pm last night. Their are now 5 baby budgies all have been fed. The youngest cockatiel (1 Day old) has dissapeared from the nest box, I've looked everywhere and cannot find him. The parents are not paying any attentuion to the younger babies, they are only feeding the older ones. I have fed the babies plain yoghurt again this morning. Should I just keep doing this till they are bigger and hopefully the mother will feed them? Or should I handraise them myself? Their is no blood on either cockatiel so I dont think they ate the baby..
December 11, 200816 yr Sorry to hear about your tiel baby :laughter: Glad your budgie babies are all fed.
December 11, 200816 yr Author Hi. What do I need to sucessfully handraise baby cockatiels? Is a fish tank with shavings in the bottom and a lid good enough for the babies t be in? Or do I need a heat pack or lighting? And Is vanila yoghurt a good food for them to be raised on? The reason I'm askign is because the cockatiels arent even feeding the big babies anymore. They have not been fed at all today. I will see how it is tomorow but if they are not fed again tomorow I think I will have to handraise them.

If they havn't been fed today, you need to feed them and not leave it until tomorrow. You need handraising formula... yogurt is not suitable to raise them on permanently. You'll need a source of heat to keep them warm. I'm not experienced in this, so you're best to wait for others... but that's just my limited opinion.

Yoghurt is a stop gap food for a first emergency feeding. You DO need handraising mixture, and warmth. Every baby should face the night time with a feed in it to keep its body warm through the night. Tiels are NOT my thing, but I guess its much the same as budgies. ARE you on a TIEL FORUM ? as this topic should be directed at Tiel experts. Edited December 11, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 11, 200816 yr Author I was thinking budgies and cockatiels are basically the same with their diet and the sort. Is their a rearing mix I can make myself that does not require a pestle and mortar? Also, Why do the babies need a heat pad or light? In the nest box they dont have a heatpad or light but they still survive. Thankyou I will join a tiel forum now.

December 11, 200816 yr Author okay Thankyou KAZ. My budgies always incubate their babies but with my cockatiels they just go in and feed and go out. I have never seen the cockatiels keeping their babies warm or staying in the nest box for long periods of time, Maybe the babies keep eachother warm by bunching in together?
December 11, 200816 yr Yes I am a member of totally tiels, no one is onlinee That would be because Liv is on holidays here with me in western australia . She is out but will be back here shortly :hap:
December 11, 200816 yr Author Oh okay Thankyou KAZ. I will buy some hand rearing formula and feed the babies but leave them in the nest box.
December 12, 200816 yr Author Hi all If I were to put the babies in an ice cream container on the bottom of the cage during the day do you think the parents woud feed them then? Can I try this?
December 14, 200816 yr Author Hi all When all chicks reach 8+ days old and their are no eggs, is the mother required to incubate the chicks? Both neon and summer only go in to feed the chicks but do not incubate them at night. The babies keep eachother warm by sticking close together.
December 14, 200816 yr Parents vary...generally they stop keeping chicks warm through the night when the first ones have pin feathers. You may be seeing them doing less of this if the weather is warm. You may also be seeing this if this is a nestbox affected by mites ? Edited December 14, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 14, 200816 yr Author I have changed nestbox and sprayed everywhere, I have not seen any mites. If I take a close up photo of one of them could somebody identify that it is definitly a red mite?

You dont need a photo ..................the red mites look brownish when not full of blood and red when they are. If you squash them they show blood.
December 15, 200816 yr Isn't it amazing how fast they grow??!! I held budgie chicks for the first time today, so tiny and cute... Thanks MB! Edited December 15, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 15, 200816 yr Author Yes it is jimmy they get bigger everyday. From this: To this: To this: To this: and finally: I should add that the two youngest neon and thunder babies can fly perfectly well now, and the eldest is growing feathers quite fast. I dont want to leave the eldest by himself so I'm leaving the other babies in their with him until he can fly also. Edited December 15, 200816 yr by pearce

December 17, 200816 yr Author Hi Babies are all doing very well, not pale anymore and they are all full of energy. All babies have now been rung and I had no problems with that either. 2 of neons youngest babies were released into the avairy yesterday and they are doing well. The eldest is still sprouting feathers but I'm confident he will eventually be able to fly. I got a very very cheap garden shed thats about 6 years old, and remade it into a breeding room or flight im not sure yet. Its definitly not the best but its good enough for me. Its rat proof with insulation I bought from bunnings. All I need to do now is cement a slab and bolt it into the ground and it will be ready. Thanks all.
December 18, 200816 yr Author Hi Their is a christmas party at the house on thursday and I dont want my bird where they are at the moment ( they are right where we will be sitting). My breeding shed is finished but it has different light conditions to where they are now. At the moment they are under a patio that gets no sun light but gets filtered light and shade. In the avairy they will get filtered light and shade but it is a little bit darker than the patio. The avairy has one full side mesh and thats where the breeze comes from and the wind. Can I move the breeding cages with birds? Some have eggs and some have babies. They wouldnt be stressed by moving them because the cages are very light and they wouldnt get shaken about or anything. Should I or should I not.
