As long as they are eating well on their own then I would be happy to put them in the aviary on a not too cold day at that age

Hi

I bought egg and buscuit mix today but its not what I expected. It is like a dry sandy substance and it should not be wet at all, is this what normal egg mix is? I thought you had to wet it.

You add water and mix with the dry egg and biscuit mix to a soft consistency ;)

okay Thanks very much KAZ.

It is $15 for a tiny little 1 kg bag of it, very expensive for its quantity if you ask me.

Homemade Egg and Biscuit

2 ounces cornflour

1 pinch salt

2 tablespoons peanut oil

2 kilos self raising flour

6 eggs, beaten

4 fluid ounces water

Mix all ingredients into a firm dough, roll out to fit a flat baking tray.

Spray tray lightly with safe cooking oil spray.

Cook in amoderate oven until pale brown.

Allow to cool and than crush the cooked mixture in a blender until crumbled.

Store in a airtight container and feed to birds as required.

Thanks very much for that KAZ.

How long does the mixture stay fresh? Does it need to be frozen or put in a fridge?

Where did you get that recipe from?

Thanks heaps

If its dry it will stay fresh for a long time. No fridge needed but use the fridge if you are worried about a moisture content. This recipe is from one of our budgie clubs in W.A.

okay Thanks KAZ I am going to have a go at making it now.Hi.is one tea spoon of bi carb soda harmfull to the birds?

  • Author

I have made the mixture and it looks okay.

I got a full container from just 2 eggs and 1 quarter of the recommended mix.

If this is sucessfull I will never have to buy egg and buscuit again.

Do I have to add water? If so how much?

Thankyou

Thanks very much the birds love it. I will put neon and thunders babies in another cage for 2 weeks starting from tomorow, they are being plucked.

  • Author

Hi all

The babies are doing very well, all are eating by themselves.

I have been advised to not let neon and thunder breed again. What are the odds of their only 3 babies having french moult/feather defect? Are the babies just unlucky or can both parents have a gene that transmits french moult? Fair enough if it was only one baby in the nest but all 3 have it..

^He likes the eggfood so much he has decided to make a nest in it.

To be perfectly honest when it comes to french moult everyone has an opinion. And everyone is right :) I personally would breed with them again but no one really knows what causes it... Good luck with future breeding of other birds. Hope it goes better.

Thankyou Maesie.

Is anyone able to tell me the mutation of this baby.

I am 90% sure she is skyblue opaline. But her blue seems diluted so maybe she is dilute?

it is a skyblue opaline but not diluted ;) it's body colour is like that because it's young... As it grows up it will come through stronger :D

Just an extra.... anytime you want to ask about a mutation...always include photos of the back of the bird.

Thankyou everyone for the help.

I already knew she was opaline so I didnt worry about posting the back of her, I just needed to know if she was dilute or not.

Thankyou all

Thankyou very much again KAZ for the egg and biscuit recipe.

This is the first time my birds have ever touched the egg. They get a hard boiled egg 4 times a week with vegies but they never touch the egg. Now they eat it on a daily basis.
