Hi

Here is the moulting budgie... He is just getting worse and worse.. I pick him up and my hands are just covered in feathers, and he is the oldest in the nest by 2 days but has the least amount of feathers.

And this is the budgie that I said was a feather duster. But now I am not so sure.

I also have yet another question.

I have neon and thunder in a breeding cage and they have 3 babies (ranging from 30 - 38 days old)

I do not want thunder to lay another lot of eggs. So what can I do? She will lay eggs in a few days I can already notice the large droppings and she is mating with neon alot. If I remove the nest box the babies will not have anywhere to shelter. What can I do?

I do not want neon and thunder breeding again because every baby has either been plucked or it has french moult and one even looks to be feather duster.

Either put the babies in a box on the floor of the breeder cage and block off the nestbox, or remove the mother to another cage.

okay Thanks KAZ

The father will feed the chicks by himself right?

okay Thanks KAZ

If he has been feeding them up to this point he should continue. The older ones should be eating seed by now though...are they yet ?

They have not come out of the nest box yet...

I have never seen the father feed them as of yet.

Thanks

Hi everyone.

The babies are doing great. Summer and chompers babies are in a cage on their own now and I put a few toys and things in their. They are eating seed, calcium bells, cuttlefish and they love corn kernels. They also drink water.

Neon and thunders babies are doing well aswell. All still have low amounts of feathers so I am 90% sure they have french moult. They all have stubby tails.

They are all out of the nest box now.

Questions:

1. I want to stop neon laying eggs so if I were to remove the nest box and put all the babies in a ice cream container with shavings on the floor, would they be fed?

2. Can someone please name some brands of hulled oats? I have been to countless pet shops and none know what I am talking about.

Thanks I will post pictures soon.

Pearce....petshops wont know what you are talking about as hulled oats are not sold in branded packets. They are a grain and sold at stock feed suppliers. Places where they sell feed for horses and cattle and pets and birds but not pet stores or supermarkets.

You mentioned that they are all out of the nest box now... Yes? Then I would say they will be fine. Just have it open during th day and closed at night :D

Just as an additional thing about your french moult babies Pearce. I also have two french moult babies right now...same as yours. Mine were neglected by their original parents and not fed well in the early days so they were fostered to a very good nest. It took a few days before they picked up condition in the new foster nest, but eventually they were fit and healthy. Just prior to the age where they would fledge they dropped all flights and some body feathers also. Other chicks in the foster nest are fine. This proves my theory that this kind of feather loss is due to nutritional deficiencies at a vital stage in a chicks development. I just also wanted you to know that having unfortunate chicks like this happens to everyone at various times, no matter how much experience you have with breeding. Its just one of those things :D

Thankyou for that information KAZ.

I have 2 more questions if thats okay.

1. Does anyone think it still could be a stress moult or is it to late for that now? I will post pictures if necessary.

2. I have 8 week old babies in a cage at the moment and I am wondering if I should put them in the avairy or leave them in the cage? What do you think I should do?

Thanlks

Stress moulters grow back their feathers in a few weeks of losing them. Time will tell.

The 8 week olds if independant and eating well could go in your aviary if you dont have a large kindie cage like I do. My babies usually stay in the large flight cage called my KINDIE cage till their first moult or around 3-5 months old, whichever comes first.

THanks KAZ.

How big is your cage?

I just dont want to release them into the avairy to find they could not eat and all died.

Also, By looking at the pictures of the babie budgies do you think they will grow to be show size? Or are they pet type babies?

The mother and father are show budgies but these babies look more like pet types. Will they grow alot bigger?

My kindie cage is a metre tall by a metre wide by two feet deep.

If you put yours in the aviary you would have to watch they were eating and eating well. That they could find the food, and that no others were picking on them. If the aviary has soil floors you would have to worm them on a regular basis. You would have to protect them fropm draughts and excess heat.

It gets very hot where I live and the avairy is made out of tin. I spray the avairy roof with water twice a day is their anything else I can do?I am going to have to do somthing about the heat before I put the babies in the avairy. Any ideas?

You will need to erect a shade sail over the roof of the aviary. Some cheap shadecloth gazebos can be found that you can erect over the aviary for under $100.

Alright I will see what I can do thankyou.

do you think shade cloth from bunnings placed about 50 cm above the avairy roof would cool it down?

Yes...it will make a big difference. There is varying types of shade cloth....you need one with almost total blockout. Check the shade sail prices too in case they work out cheaper.

Cheers kaz
