BUT Can you beleive this young cock here Turned into this
April 30, 200916 yr I think those are the things we hold out for in this breeding dealio! The downs are hard, but the ups are so rewarding
April 30, 200916 yr okay I've had a talk to Henry. Your idea with the bleach is fine. Henry cleans out his flights every week end with Bleach. Henry thinks it's a deficiency in nutrition.
April 30, 200916 yr Protien and amino acids and calcium are the three main things for feathers i belive My breeders get 4 dished of food at all times. 1) Fisher mix - white millet, canary seed and Jap millet. 2) pure sunflower seed. 3) pure Canary seed 4) budgie starter with egg and biscuit mix. They also get veggies and soaked seed, iodine blocks and cuttle bone etc as well... I don't know if i have FM yet (my babies are not old enough) but i can tell you it scares the life out of me. I will be devastated too if it hits A breeder i was talking to said to always keep a few runners on the floor of your aviary as it helps the others get immune to the virus (until a different strain comes in on a new bird). He also told me that if FM hits, to shut down all breeding for 6 months minimum and let all the birds be in the aviary with lots of quality sunlight. I love your spangle! What a reward out of all of your hard work Edited April 30, 200916 yr by **Liv**
April 30, 200916 yr Thankyou DazWhat am I not feeding them that is causing this? What is in the Seed mix from Karlos? I feed mine. Plain Seed 2 canary, 1 French, 1 jap, 1/2 red panican and a touch of Niger. Water is plain to every 2 lts I add 2.5ml weak iodine. 4 days a week. Plain water with avicleans the rest of the week unless they are moulting and then I add Moulting aide. Soft Food every day is 1 large carrot & Beetroot grated, Baby Spinach leaves and Parsley (spinach and paisley blended) to this I add 1/2 table spoon pentivite this is made up for a week. Every morning and night they get 6 table spoons of this mixture, 1 table spoon whole egg powder, 1 tablespoon of Finch Soft food, 1 cup of hulled oats and 2/3 to 1 cup of budgie starter. Saturday and Sunday they get veggies (carrots, celery, mung bean, snow pea sprouts and corn) in the late afternoon. They have True grit & charcoal in the holding cages and breeding cabinets and True grit in the flights. The breeding and holding cabinets are cleaned and disinfected with FS10sc once a week and so are the flights. I don't hose. I scrape and vacuum every week. High pressure cleaner in the flight and breeding room twice a year. I know I haven't answered your question just putting up what I do. But I am interested in what the seed mix is. You are either missing something ..... Calcivite? (thinking out aloud) It has D. How are your birds getting their D? Mine is in the True Grit and Calcivite. Your birds can't process the calcium you are giving them with out D. If this is so the Phosphrous levels will be out. What about Iodine? There is Iodine in True Grit. I know you have the eggs for protien which is good. Edited April 30, 200916 yr by Daz
April 30, 200916 yr because over the last year I have had -Babies born with pbfd. Babies with french moult Babies with weak feathers and no flights Baby with sissors beak. baby with splayed legs egg eating Mother killing chicks Red mite Dead birds Many more. Pearce hang in there - There would not be a breeder in the country that has not had a majority of the ailments you have listed. This is what makes breeding any form of livestock a CHALLENGE. I have days when i want to open the flight doors, but when i turn my brain back on i realise that most problems can be overcome with minor changes/adjustments. My grandfather used to tell me that "when you breed livestock and also get dead stock" great bit of advice.
May 1, 200916 yr Author Thankyou Heath and all. What is in the Seed mix from Karlos I would not have a clue Daz. He makes mine when he makes his. It has various seeds in it and its very good quality. How can I get iodine to add to the water Daz? What is aviclens? What does it do? What is budgie starter and what does it do? I give calcivet twice a week. I'm interested to hear what those things are, maybe I could get them and use them? True grit, Budgie starter, Aviclens and idone. Where do I get these products? Thanks Daz.
May 1, 200916 yr Iodine I get from the local chemist. Ask for aqueous iodine ( ask the chemist to make it up for you...you wont find it on the shelf ) and put around 7 drops per litre of water.
May 1, 200916 yr Pearce, pull yourself together mate! Budgie breeding is fraught with difficulties - Especially for the beginner. It does get better, believe me, but till then look upon these setbacks as "learning". For those of us who have been doing it for more than a couple of years I can assure you that we have all faced similar disasters at one time or another - there's not much I can say except '**** does happen'! So chin up and get on with it. You have worked too hard and learnt too much to date to just chuck in the towel.
May 1, 200916 yr Author thankyou all. I didnt see your post Liv thankyou. I was told sunflower seeds makes birds too fat? What is budgie starter? Is iodine blocks enough iodine for a bird or should they have liquid iodine also?
May 1, 200916 yr thankyou all. I didnt see your post Liv thankyou. I was told sunflower seeds makes birds too fat? What is budgie starter? Is iodine blocks enough iodine for a bird or should they have liquid iodine also? My birds get 1 cup of black sunflower seeds in their soft food mix - all in moderation and you should be okay. Budgie starter is a pre-mixed high protein powder you can get on the accessory table at your club. Some people give it to breeding pairs, some put it in the soft food mix ... personally I don't bother with it but it's a matter of personal choice. I add 6 drops/L of iodine to the water with the ACV. It helps with budgie libido and keeps the water clean. Again all in moderation- don't overdo it cause it can mess up their thyroids. You should be able to get it from the chemists, remember to ask for AQUEOUS iodine - I get Luggolts (Brand name).

May 1, 200916 yr Author Thanks heaps Daz I've ordered worm out gel and Ill have a look at true grit and avi clens. Thankyou all. Edited May 1, 200916 yr by Pearce
May 1, 200916 yr Author Is vetafarm a cheap place to buy things? When you include the 5 dollars postage, is it worth going to vetafarm? I've never seen wormout gel available in stores but on vetafarm its 21 dollars plus 5 dollars postage for 100 mil. Can pet stores or other websites beat that? Who here uses vetafarm? Are their prices relatively fair?
May 1, 200916 yr No it is better to use your club's sale table.. they can get it cheaper. Pearce I will be on holidays after next friday.. give me call and arrange a time to come over and I'll give you some starters. eg Budgie Starter, Iodine, etc.
May 1, 200916 yr Author I will take you up on that Daz. I have always wanted to see your birds. How long do you reckon a 1kg bag of budgie starter would last? 4 pairs of breeding birds. I found it for sale $9 dollars. Also found aristo-pet avi-cal. Similar to calcivet. Have you ever used this? What is it like? Do you know of any shops in the brisbane ipswich area that would be relativley cheap on bird meds and supplements? Thanks heaps.
