Excellent read Dean its good to see you have goals and you love what you do. Have a thousand thoughts of what to do circling my head.

I do not breed for show, but I am a member of a club and do have show birds. I just like the look of a show bird more than the pet type bird. I think I will keep on breeding show birds, but never show them.

Problems after problems just annoy me like nothing else. I dont earn alot of money and the money I do earn needs to go towards other things. So I struggle to buy medications etc. I am going to take down my big aviary and possibly put the birds in the breeding shed or somthing else Im not sure. You;ve had baby birds with bad flights Kaz? The current babies if they fly into anything they lose flight feathers. They fall out so easy. Another pairs last clutch had the same problem. How is it fixed.

Any babies with bad flights that I have either survive in the main aviary or they dont Pearce. I put them in there in a make or break situation....either they grow some feathers and make it or they fail. The worst ones are euthenased. I sent two to "God" yesterday.

why are they born like that? What causes it?

In my case they were french moult birds.

when you stick them in the aviary what happens if they dont get up high enough for the food?

Or do you have food low down on the ground for them

Pearce, I would set about doing a big clean. Put the birds in a cage and give the aviary a good scrub. I'd use a good strong bleach. You can get it at a shop. Cheap too. Water it down as sugested and give everything a good scrub.

Then hose it all out and let dry. If you can get some AIL from vetafarm. Pet shops sell it. give the place a good spray.

What do you feed your birds on and what about the water.

Discribe your management for us.

Kaz and others can have a look at this.

I am going over to Henry George's tonight, but will look at it when I get back.

Don't give up yet. You have some top birds, especially for a beginner.

Hi Daz

Every weekend I bleach the breeding room and hose it down completley. The aviary is done every month.

The breeding birds get:

Calcium and iodine bells (24/7 access)

Bird seed mixed by Karlos

They get a range of different vegetables each day, depending. Also eggs and other mixes.

Egg food ocasionally.

Hulled oats 3 days per week.

Millet spray once per week.

The water -

2 days per week calcivet.

2 days per week acv

3 days per week plain water.

The birds are wormed every 6th months and treated for mites every 6 months. Sprayed with ail.

when you stick them in the aviary what happens if they dont get up high enough for the food?

Or do you have food low down on the ground for them

I have large branches going all the way up to the food and water for the bird who "struggle".

Pearce, please dont sell your birds...you have some lovely birds and babies now...

as Daz says we can help you get over this :P

You bleach "Every" week.. mmmmm A build up of too much bleach in the aviary????

I'll talk to Henry.

  • Author

the birds cannot get to the bleach.

Daz if you get time are you able to ask Henry why some chicks have weak flight feathers that fall out all of the time? Im pretty sure its not french moult, but its happened in 2 clutches so It could be somthing else.

Edited by Pearce

Shannon is right. Breeding birds is disheartening and we all go through the ups and downs of it. The things that happen daily in people's aviaries isnt always talked about....we just deal with it and move and on and count the happy moments. Its like life.........is your glass half full or is it half empty. When you are down its very easy to see things all negative. But those birds you have coming through show promise and it would be a great pity for you not to keep trying.

and remember....never be too proud to ask for help or advice or to get a fellow budgie member over to look and see what they can advise to make things better for you and your birds.

the birds cannot get to the bleach.

I know just how you feel pearce. I had just the same thing happen to me in my last clutches. 3 chicks and one foster in a nest, the oldest chick and the foster both lost all their flights and tail feathers. I treated them with ivermectin (one drop on the neck each) and it appears to have worked, but thats debatable. The foster lost all her flights and feathers, the oldest lost the same but kept one tail feather. They both since regrew about 4 flights on each wing, but when the foster flies they fall out again. The oldest seems to have kept them.

I dont know if its mites or lack of protein. It cant be a breeding fault because they arent related. It could be french moult, but i honestly havent read up on that (focus too much on genetics study lol). It is frustrating because the oldest chick is my best (biggest) of all bred this year. It looks like the foster is losing body feathers too, and continuing to do so.

I cant figure it out and its annoying me too. Stick with it!

  • Author

Yes its very annoying. Someone else suggested ivermectin for the birds also dean so you are definitly on to somthing their.

I've got an old really thick curtain I hang over the wire on the aviary on raining days and it seems to work. Hasnt rained in a while so yeah..

Thats my main concern.

I dont even know why they've only regrown 3-4 flights on each wing. Why not all? Why did the foster lose them again and start losing shoulder feathers as well. I think she may have some sort of lung mite, she 'clicks' when she breathes. I was home doing an essay, and i heard a clicking noise all day and i was getting creeped out until i realised it was timed perfectly with her breathing. I am considering treating her once more with ivermectin since its been about 2 weeks since her first drop, and if she does have a lung mite, ivermectin SHOULD clear it up.

Otherwise i will be trying one of the natural remedies we have been discussing in that other thread of yours. If you do still sell, try and keep the top half of your budgies. You have far better birds than I do! I believe what kaz says about the bad things most breeders experiencing going unsaid. I dont doubt people tend to keep their dirty laundry hidden out of public view!
