Hi all.

I have good news.

Pet pair 2 had its first baby today

The hen was originally bred last year and then sold as a chick to my uncle. About 3 months ago my uncle moved away and could not look after her. So she came back to my place. I have just called him and he is very happy.

I have put a new pair up to breed.

This is an awesome looking pair. Perhaps the best birds I have seen you with so far. I am very jealous of these ones.

Just one thing, you spoke about how long they should have inbetween clutches, and you talked about putting birds down once out of quarantine.

We had a talk at my budgie club on friday night abotu Artificial Insemination. One point that came up in the talk was about timing and when to put a bird down. Now, the head of the Budgie Society of NSW is a member of my club, and he was making an excellent point about birds cycling and putting them down at the right time. It is not just enough to put them in a cage when you want and everything will be fine. You need to put them in a cage at the right time so that the hen and the cock are in the right stage of their cycle.

If you have to ask about when they should start again, then they were not in the right cycle to bgein with.

I know that more experienced breeders will explain this more correctly than I can do, but i am told that once the cere is looking brown, you have missed that opportunity. That the birds should be put in before their cere looks ready to allow them to cycle through in the breeding cages. Does that make sense/ If you have to ask if they are ready ro how long, then do not put them in.

Thankyou for your post dave.

The grey green pair have been in my avairy for a while now and are not in quarantine at this point. They were quarantined when I bought them last year.

I put the hen in when her cere is lightish brown, slowly she will come further into condition. I do not put hens in with white/blue ceres and I try not to put hens in with crusty brown ceres.

The question I asked about another pair was if I could put a pair straight out of quarantine into breeding cabinets. this question was asked ages ago and I did not end up doing it.

And I also made a post a few weeks ago saying if I should split the birds up after one clutch or not. Most people I know do 2 clutches then 6 month break then another 2. The birds I talked about were only finished their first clutch, and I wanted to know whether I should wait a while or put them back in the avairy. I decided to wait 3 days, just incase the hen laid eggs in the avairy. The pair were in perfect health. On the second day she laid an egg. Now she has 3 and is still in perfect health. If she shows any signs of stress, beleive me I will foster the eggs out.

but i am told that once the cere is looking brown, you have missed that opportunity.

I always thought If you put a hen in a breeding cage out of condition (bluish white cere) that she will be more prone to eat her eggs and hurt the chicks and cock, is this incorrect?

I have also read that some breeders get an amount of hens and the same amount of cocks. They put all hens in one cage and all cocks in another. The cages are side by side so they can hear eachother. I am told this gets the birds into condition aswell. I am yet to try this.

thankyou all.

and thankyou dave for the advice.

The splitting up of the sexes is wrong as I understand it. breeders that I respect, that have won nationals, have told me this is wrong. Budgies have recreational sex, and so what happens when you remove this opportunity from them? they become more interested in what is available to them. We klnow budgies will bond with a mirror given a chance, so why stop them from beonding to something they should bond to?

Most of the uk breeders I know use the method. I will ask why they do it.

congratulations on your second baby.

I love your grey green pair - they are amazing :)

I also do not know any breeders who separate the sexes. All the breeders i have visited so far have 3 groups in individual flights; 1 adult flight, 1 baby flight, 1 cull flight.

I also know a lot of breeders who used to seperate the sexes in flights who no longer do it....why ?? Because the hens got lazy and fat with no interaction with the boys, and the youngster do learn how to flirt and mate watching others in a mixed flight....which is a good thing.

I am talking about only seperating them for 2 weeks before breeding, not seperating them for their entire lives....

In that case I would agree with that :)

I have never heard of anyone seperating the sexes for their entire lives.

I have never heard of anyone seperating the sexes for their entire lives.

In a search on here you will find it has been talked about before where some breeders keep seperate flights for hen and cocks and only bring them together for breeding.

Shannon don't kill the daddy long legs if thats what you mean. They cannot hurt us and keep the more dangerous spiders away.
