September 13, 200816 yr I think they are infertile but I will try explain what the eggs look like. They are clear with a dot on one side with little lines coming from it. I was told this means the chick is in their but it is dead They probably froze over night. No! I believe that a dot with veins IS Fertile!!!! congratulations She must be incubating overnight and hoping out the box each time you check her Edited September 13, 200816 yr by **Liv**
September 13, 200816 yr Author Realy??? That is great news. I have yet another question. I have been reading that show budgies die very early... (4-6 years old..). I have english budgies (show budgies). I do not show them. Is it because show budgies are showed and taken around the world that they die so young? My budgies stay in the avairy like any other pet budgie, will they also die young? What is the cause of english budgies dieing so young but pet budgies live for 13+ years. I call my budgies "english budgies" simply because I have never taken a bird to a show in my life. I have show budgies I bought from a breeder that lived to be 9 years old... was that a miracle? Thanks
September 13, 200816 yr I am not sure about the difference with the life span I would have assumed that it was the same as pet types ... Maybe a show breeder can answer that one .. http://www.budgiescape.com/videos13a.html < --- here is a video of what to look for when candling eggs
September 13, 200816 yr Author Hi neat Thanks for the reply. I have seen all those videos and I have seen alot of pictures of candling eggs. I was on a site that said if it had a big spot it meant that the chick had died in the shell. I can only hope.HiI have had the bad flue + asthma for 5 days now. I have not been able to sleep during the night and I always go out the back and see if she is sitting on the eggs or not, I usually check once an hour. She definitly is not incubating over night unless she goes in when I am not their but I highly doubt it, she cannot hear me approaching. She is sound asleep snuggled up with sumo for warmth. That is why I had low hopes with the eggs surviving. Not being incubated for 10 nights would surley mean death, even if she does incubate during the day. I will still keep my fingers crossed. I am going to try make a bird incubator for the quail eggs because half the time they lay 15 eggs and only sit on 7. Maybe it can work for budgies and I can just handfeed them. I have hand fed alot of budgies that were attacked by the parents and they were very tame birds and still are. Edited September 13, 200816 yr by pearce
September 13, 200816 yr I have heard that myth about pet vs show and I know it was discussed here by our show breeders and they say it is untrue. In fact your pet budgies are so over breed that you will find more health issues in them vs the show type that (we hope) are breed more for health and genetics and not the mass market.

I check my birds twice a day when they are laying. No more is needed.
September 13, 200816 yr Author Hi I am about 8 feet away from the cage when I check her and I doubt she can hear or see me. It is pitch black. She does not move the entire time, she is asleep... I would be disturbing her if I woke her up while she was in the nest but the fact is she does not go in their at night. Thanks.

September 14, 200816 yr Author Hi Summer has been having big green droppings today and I am wondering if it is a disease or egg droppings... She layed an egg today. She layed the egg on the ground of the cage instead of the nesting box, I do not know why she did this as she spends alot of her time in the nest box. I moved the egg into the nest box to show her that this is where you lay from now on. Did I do the right thing? The egg was not cracked but it would have fell about 20 cm so I have low hopes for the chick inside.. Here is a picture of the droppings. http://i34.tinypic.com/20fagk0.jpg Thank you
September 14, 200816 yr I couldn't see any droppings in that photo, but it is normal for hens who are about to lay to have large droppings.
September 14, 200816 yr Author Hi Sorry that was the wrong photo. I was just a little worried because they are green instead of black. http://i36.tinypic.com/117xrp0.jpg Thank you.
September 14, 200816 yr Pearce what you have there is EGG POOP congratulations with the egg thing I would have done the same thing, I hope she gets the idea
September 14, 200816 yr Pearce ....if you are this anxious over the imminent arival of eggies and baby budgies you will wear a track in the hospital corridor when you are waiting for your own children to arrive

September 14, 200816 yr Author Pearce ....if you are this anxious over the imminent arival of eggies and baby budgies you will wear a track in the hospital corridor when you are waiting for your own children to arrive That will probably be happening. I tend to get abit over excited with some things. I just want it to work. Thanks.
September 15, 200816 yr Author Hi Does anyone have any instructions on how to make an egg incubator? I want it for quail and budgie eggs mostly. Do budgie eggs successfully hatch from incubators? Thanks
September 17, 200816 yr Author Hi all. Grunt's eggs are 19 days old and definitly 100% infertile... Clear as a crystal. Should I take the eggs out and put them back in the avairy for a rest? How long should I wait before putting them back in the breeding cage (I want them to rest as long as they need to) Grunt did not incubate over night. Do you think next clutch she will realise her mistakes and start incubating more? She stopped incubating them after a few days. She is a first time hen so I am hoping she was just inexperienced Update: Summer has now laid 2 eggs. Thanks Edited September 17, 200816 yr by pearce
September 18, 200816 yr Author Hi I have another question if that is okay... I have 2 pairs in the avairy that I want to put into breeding cabinets. should I put them both in the cabinets now or should I put the female in first for 24 hours? Or maybe put both males in the same cage and both females in another and leave the cages together? What should I do? Thanks very much
September 18, 200816 yr Author Thank you very much KAZ How long should I leave them in the cage before adding the nest box? Also, One of my hens cere was dark brown and crusty yesterday, now today it is light brown and with a few dark patches. It is as if she has shed her cere. Does that mean she is coming into condition or going out of? I have a feeling it means she is going out of condition so I did not add her to the cage. I need to make sure. Yet another question, if you do not know the mutations of the parents, is their a visual way to tell if a budgie is split for a mutation? Thank you very much all. Update: Summer is now sitting on 3 eggs and is incubating. I am looking to buy an egg incubator for the quails.. they sit on them till the chicks are almost ready to hatch then they move the eggs around the place and ditch them... I do not know why all I do know is that I need an incubator.
September 18, 200816 yr Thank you very much KAZ How long should I leave them in the cage before adding the nest box? I dont add a nestbox. September 19, 200816 yr Author Hi Summer laid an egg off the perch on the 14th of september then laid another on the 16th in the nest box. She did not lay one yesterday or today though, She is incubating all day I'm just wondering if she has stopped? Maybe she only wants 2 babies. It does not bother me either way I am just wondering if some budgies accidently skip a day or was this intentional. They usually lay every second day if im correct.. she laid on the 14th then the 16th then she skipped the 18th and did not lay today (19th) either. Thanks very much. P.S If you want me to stop asking all these questions please tell me.
