August 15, 200817 yr Author That's good to hear Liv! Though from the sounds of it everyone seems to think the lump is terminal. I wish I had more time to actually get him to a vet surgery, the nearest one being a good 20km away (that I know of, unless Derek knows of a good one nearer to me). Thanks Kaz, I have to go near the pet store tomorrow, might see if I can squeeze in an examination tonight for my birdy so I can go there with some info at least.
August 15, 200817 yr Not the greatest situation... but if they have offered to give you your money back, and you refused, I don't think you can then expect them to pay for the vet bills. They did offer you a solution and you chose not to take it. I would have done the same as you, as I couldn't take the bird back knowing it probably wont get treated... but yeah... I'd still check out what the go is with their responsibilites, but don't get your hopes up. Whether or not they meant to sell you a sick bird, I don't think you'll ever be able to prove it. Good luck and please keep us updated
August 15, 200817 yr Author I'm not looking to get them to pay the vet bills, that was other peoples suggestion. I only wanted them to give me some indication of what is wrong with him, not for them to blantantly say he's fine and I'm dreaming that there is an egg size lump on his chest. I even showed them the photos. I want the little guy to be okay, I picked him out of a cage because I liked him, not the other birds. Well okay, I got a pure white albino too, but she's fine Either way, the vet has given me a few simple things to do until I can get in there to get a proper exam. I know that the exam will probably be about $40 unless I go to the avian vet, which will be more.

I didn't mean you specifically... more generally Good luck with him, and I would try to go to the avain vet as they are more experieced with them.
August 15, 200817 yr Goitre. This is another avenue we can do down ? What do you FEED your birds and WHAT does HE EAT! So it has gone down and then comes back up ???? Edited August 15, 200817 yr by Neat
August 15, 200817 yr Author I feed them Trill and Avian Sciene bird seed. I think he's had some carrot and lettuce since I got him, I've been a bit slack with the vegies since I got my new job a few weeks back.

TIP: Tin Corn, or mixed vegies are great to have in the cupboard for those days you are short for time .... What is Avian Science seed??? Iodine, Does he have a mineral or iodine block in his cage???
August 15, 200817 yr Have you seen the [pics of AV's hen which had a lump on her chest which turned out to be her crop?
August 15, 200817 yr With Goitre they can't empty their crops properly MB due to the gland pressing on the throat
August 15, 200817 yr But is it the gland that is the 'lump' or the crop? If goitre in birds is the same as humans then it would be the gland which wouldn't come and go it would be always present. SG said the condition came and went.
August 15, 200817 yr Your spot on there MB - I didn't read that it actually came back I was asking and SG said it is back .... So well .. sorry okay The vet is the best thing it could be Like I have stated a Number of things - yeast infection in the crop, Tumor, cancer, thyroid problems etc ... Best to take him to the vet. Avain too not just a normal one and get them to give him a once over
August 15, 200817 yr Take his food away for a ew hours and see if it decreases in size, then give it back and see if it goes up again. That might answer a few questions for you
August 15, 200817 yr Author I will try that MB! Avian Science is just a seed brand, pretty much like Trill but I think there is a couple of different seed types in there. We have it here in QLD, not sure if you have it elsewhere but its on the shelf in woolies/safeway alongside Trill. I forgot about corn! it took my lot a while to pick up on corn but they love it now. I usually give them some milk thistle too, but the place i was getting it from mowed their lawn :/ but that was prior to me getting Sky. The lump appears to go away, I'm not 100% sure if it does or not, its just hard to see sometimes, and others its plain as day, like in the photos. The Vet here said they'd be able to diagnose the bird properly but gave me the number of their avian vet if I wanted to go straight there or the bird needs surgery.
August 16, 200817 yr Author Vet Diagnosis: Abssess, cause by an infected open wound at some point. Going to give him Doxycycline Hydorochloride for 10 days to see if it clears up before risking an operation.
August 16, 200817 yr AWESOME !!!!!!!!! That is good to hear , will not good that he is sick but it isn't cancer!!!!!
August 16, 200817 yr Author Yeah I'm really happy about that, of course, if the AB's don't work and he has to go under the knife, well there is significant risk there too. So I'm hoping the AB's do the job.
August 16, 200817 yr Atleast you now know what it is. Lets hope it clears up and surgery isn't needed. Thanks for the update
August 16, 200817 yr I would let the shop know. I'm not saying you have to go in there and demand anything out of them or have a go at them but I would be letting them know that the bird was sick as you thought. If they offer you your money back again you could always go, that would be great but I'd rather take the refund and keep the bird and put the money towards the treatment and see what they say It will cost them more to treat the bird if they were to take it back off you so from their perspective that makes financial sense.
August 16, 200817 yr TIP: Tin Corn, or mixed vegies are great to have in the cupboard for those days you are short for time ....What is Avian Science seed??? Tinned vegies have salt added and sometimes sugar also Frozen is better.
August 16, 200817 yr Author I never wanted anything from them except help. It's also quite possible that he hurt himself after I bought him, maybe one of my other guys took a dislike to him, or maybe one of the butcher birds or crows got to them while I wasn't close by.
August 16, 200817 yr Vet Diagnosis: Abssess, cause by an infected open wound at some point. Going to give him Doxycycline Hydorochloride for 10 days to see if it clears up before risking an operation. Could have been clawed by a budgie in the petshop cage or something sounds like. There's enough time elapsed for it to have developed. Good news you have an answer and can work it through Edited August 16, 200817 yr by KAZ
