okay I bought some new birds less than 2 weeks ago, and one has developed an egg size lump on his chest. Yes, it's a boy, so I don't think it's an egg.

 

Any ideas?

Hmmm how long did it take to come up? Has it been slow over the 2 weeks or has it just come up in a few days? I would be gowing with growth but how does it feel, is it hard or soft and sponge?

 

I would be getting that looked at by a vet personally. Hope it works out.

I think its been slow over the last 2 weeks, though I only noticed it this week, and at first I wasn't sure if it was just the way the bird was sitting. I just rang the store I got it from, they asked a few questions about his time here, like is he in an aviary, been out flying in the house a lot, wings clipped, eaten hot food... but its none of that.

 

The lump itself is pretty soft.

Liv I believe that hot food can caught bloat in budgie but I might be wrong.

bloat or apparently burn holes in their insides.... I never knew that... but then, I'd never feed my pets hot food...

How is he otherwise?

 

What is his Poo's like? How well is he eating Eating??

Personally I would have him taken to the avian vet to see if it is crop issue or a fatty lump that would be best then guessing here on the forums and then they can give treatment if needed.

You will find it has a tumor in its stomach,thats why it feels soft,

Sorry about your bird Liv…I agree sounds like a tumour; they can come on pretty quick. I had a cock that grew one in a few weeks.

I would tell them I was getting an avian vet to check the budgie over and if they found anything then I would be sending them the account and want my money back for the budgie as well.

Yes I agree tell them that you will get a vet check done and if there is something wrong with the bird they will have to pay the cost. If nothing is wrong with the bird they you will have to pay the cost.

The lump appears to have gone down a lot, but he still shivers a lot during the day where the other birds don't, so I'm gonna have to get a vet to check him out soon I think. Other than that he seems fine, nothing out of the ordinary.

 

I'd love to hold the shop to ransom but really, its not like they would pay anyway.

they have to give you at least a two week window. i will check with my friends who run a pet store and they can tell me what their obligation would be.

If it is bad then ask the Pet shop to pay back or yo will see them in civil court and have the RSPCA on to them ..

 

If it is all good ... Nothing loss there just a few $$

Keep us updated with the avian vet visit, I do hope there is a positive resolution for the sake of the bird.

Legally I believe that they have an obligation to only supply you with a healthy bird, maybe check with the RSPCA as they should know the legalities. I'm pretty sure that they must either provide veterinary care at their cost or take the animal back to be treated as they see fit if that condition existed before you purhased the animal. I would 1. Call the RSPCA and find out your rights 2. Call the shop and inform them of your rights and their obligations and then 3. Follow up with vet care as required.

I don't think they intended to sell me a sick bird, the only sign that there may have been something wrong was he was a bit sleepy when I bought him (though I had seen him flying around a lot prior to that).

I have had the same thing too - I bought a bird that ended up being sick - the shop said i could have my $20 back. I ended up keeping the budgie and getting him vet treated myself costing me over $100. If i had given him back to the shop, I bet he would have either been killed or resold without treatment

He is now happy and healthy and will be (hopefully) filling eggs for me in a few weeks :nest:

Its hard...these petshops know you have invested love, time and hopes for these birds and they know you dont really want to give the bird back and get a refund. BUT by the same token, you should not have to pay for a sick or injured bird nor so soon in its life with you should you have to outlay huge vet costs.

Anytime you are tempted to buy a bird from a petshop...watch it for the very longest time...and if in any doubt at all over health and vigor...regardless of how pretty or endearing....just walk away. Everyone of us has fallen victim to that cute budgie in the petshop cage and every one of us has had birds that died from a petshop.

I would follow MB's advice and see where that leads .
