Sand Bases For Aviaries

Featured Replies

Hey all.

I;ve been reading through some old post of whate members use and have as a base in their avairy...

I came across Sand, which is layed over either cement, timber, bricks, lino, Gyprock -

Now i am wondering how does that work? members were talking about play sand, beach sand etc so which is the best option?

When cleaning it, How is that done? With a poop scooper ( like a kitty litter one) or is it all tossed and reaplaced????

I am thinking about using CFS Compressped Fibro Cement! it looks and feels like cement but sooo much lighter.

and now seeing the sand, I am thinking about using that too??

Thoughts please

I have been using sand pit sand in the bottom of my aviary. It covers the paved base and I use the sand pit type just because i think if its good enough (and safe enough) for the kids, then its probably okay for the birds too. Some sands can have nasty stuff in it, so try and get the cleanest stuff you can get .

And then what???? Do you just scoop it up? Is it just so the poo doesnt stick to the cement? Forgive me i am blonde!

I sweep it gently with a soft broom, taking off the top layer each week. Then about every 4 weeks i completely replace the sand :D
