Taming Gucci And Dolce

I've decided to start a taming journal with Gucci and Dolce. For those unfamilar with them, here they are:

Also, here is a photo of their cage (if you look closely in the left corner you can see four fluffy little bubs :D ) and the play gym I built for them. I didn't spend a cent on the play gym as I had everything at home:

The other two babies went to their new homes last night. I felt a little sad, but know they will be loved and looked after. I also know I can check up on them whenever I want, so that makes me feel better.

Okay... now to the taming. I have been able to get them both to 'step up' for a few weeks now, but as I go to take them out of the cage they usually get off. Over the past two day, both Gucci and Dolce have let me take them out of the cage on my finger. I'm so proud of them. They have been on the play gym a little, but are yet to come out on their own. Today when I got home from work, they both had some time out on the couch with me and the BBC. They did a lot of stepping up, walked along the couch a little and climbed over me. I had them out for a few minutes each. Gucci I returned to the play gym where he climbed up to his cage. Dolce on the other hand, decided he had had enough and flew back to the play gym, climbed up and joined Dolce back home. I feel it was a very successful first 'play' with me, and I only got pooed on once (that I know of :P ).

Signing off... maesie, gucci and dolce ;) xo xo xo

Thanks birdluv. This is all very new to me as I've only ever had outside budgies who weren't tame. I'm very excited and can't wait for their progress B)

Great start Maes,

I look forward to reading your jorney :D

You have a great setup!! I love the play gym you built too - looks like super fun!! :D

Thanks all. I've had more time with them today. This time I had them both out together. One on each finger, then to the couch, my knees, and shoulders and they also love my glasses... I also heard from one of the 'other' bubs owners. She is named 'SUNSHINE' and had some time out of her cage today. She hopped onto her Mummy's finger, did some tunneling, had a little fly, walked around on the bench and even hopped back onto her mummy's finger to go back to her cage. What a good girl!

I love taming journals it really helps give other ideas and show how to go about it, I though birdluv was awesome too with Hobbs and Claire :D

I agree. I found birdluv's and others to be very helpful :D

thanks guys :D l had fun doing the journal of my budgies. they are now tamer then l could have ever imagine, perhaps l should do an update on them later on.

l too think it is so good for budgie owners to do journals on taming their budgies, it helps other people to know that they are not alone on having some issues with taming or to learn by other peoples experience.

maesie you are doing an excellent job on taming them.

Sorry Elly, I've been slack :)

Things are coming along nicely with Gucci and Dolce. Gucci is definitely the 'leader'. She'll waddle over to the lace curtains and have a nibble, and the Dolce will do it too. I fed them chopped carrots the other day. I was in the kitchen when I heard a 'clunk' I looked out... nothing. I heard it again, still nothing, so I peeked through the door, and the little buggers were throwing carrot through the bars of the cage :) What can you do!!! lol

As to training, they are happy to play on their gym, and step up on my hand to get out. I took them separately into the spare room and they sat on me and do lots of stepping up. My nephew had them on his arm and leg and thought that was pretty cool. I need to do more one on one training, but we'll get there. They are not keen on being on the couch with me when they can see their play gym and cage, so in another room works much better.

It sounds like things are going well, i have found it is easier to train when they are not distracted by their toys.

Hahahah Naughty Budgies they have bad table manners :budgiedance:

Good to hear that things are going well - I love it when they have the step up command down pat :oliveb:

My two little rascals are doing well. They are now coming out of their cage on their own, which is excellent. I open their door, put up their ladder and let them be. It usually takes 2-5 minutes and once one come out, the other follows. I'm also noticing the different personalities. Dolce is definitely the cheeky mischievous one. She's the leader, the one to come out first, the one that doesn't want to do what I want her to do. She's started running away when I go to get her to step up when free time is over (this will NOT continue :P ) Gucci is not quite as adventurous. She'll happily follow Dolce around, but when I get up to see what they are chewing or getting into, she's like the kid that runs and hides... she's back on the play gym where she should be!!! They make me laugh ;)

they sound adorable ;),I would recommend is that you actually teach them to come out of the cage with the step-up command or to have them step-up instead of just coming out on their own because their door could get undone accidently or you may need to get in there for a second and when they do gain more confidence they may just try and fly out, by teaching them the step-up is the only time to come out it is safer. That is what I had read and that is what I did with Merlin, Pretty did what he wanted it was before I read it :P.

Good idea... that's what I have been doing. They would step up and then I would take them out and put them on the play gym. I might go back to do that. You have good points. Thanks Elly! :D

It sounds like they are going well, i am trying to teach Roxy to only come out when i get her to step up but it is not going well.
