Posted August 5, 200816 yr I'm thinking about getting a few more budgies as I love them so much. I also looking around for the biggest indoor cage possible. When having a flock of budgies together is it best to have the same amount of females to males or doesn't it matter?? Just wondering because I love seeing everyones budgies all together in a big flock its really beautiful especially when there all sitting together on the play gym chatting away to each other. August 5, 200816 yr A balance of males and females creates better harmony in a flock as the girls are more bossy and the boys are more flirtatious. Too many boys and the hens get out numbered and too much "attention" form all the males will stress them. Too many hens and the boys will get bossed around too much and stress them. Rough equality is fine, I have more males than females in my flock, but overall it balances out Edited August 5, 200816 yr by **Liv**
August 5, 200816 yr If i was to have them in a large indoor cage i'd personally keep more cocks than hens to limit fights.
August 6, 200816 yr Hens have a tendency to bicker, peck and squabble over perch space especially when settling down for the night. Bear that in mind when making sure the cage is big enough and there is lots of room and extra perches.
August 6, 200816 yr Don't forget to quarantine, also know that the more you add the less tame they are to you, so if you want a strong bond with your budgies you need to create it with the ones you have first before you add unless the taming thing is not an issue (for many it is not especially if they want an aviary situation).
August 6, 200816 yr Agree with you on this one Elly, Mac isn't as Bonded to us now that skywlker is in with him too ...
August 6, 200816 yr Author The taming thing doesn't really bother me as long as they know that they have to go back into thier cage at night. I have an alright bond with the two budgies I have at the moment they know when it's time to go back to thier cage for the night. I saw a three cinnamon winged budgies today at the Redlands Pets in Capalaba and a violet one too couldn't tell them apart gender wise, but the budgie i was so amazed with was the massize yellow and green budgie in a seperate cage from the others it was huge estimating about 2 1/2 - 3 pet type budgies size or bigger it was huge the biggest budgie I had ever seen.
August 6, 200816 yr That green and yellow sound like it was Show type ( bigger in size) or at least had show bloodline in it
August 6, 200816 yr I think if you want to keep them semi trained as you mention you are best adding 1 at a time (and of course make sure you quarentine) when you add 3 or more into a setting you will lose control, if you want more birds you may think of a larger aviary setting. Also I don't think I know do you have a large cage? If so what is the size?
August 6, 200816 yr Author Well i'm not meaning 1 want more budgies at present as Im still living at home but I would like to get a couple more later on. My budgies cage at present that holds 2 regular sized pet type budgies measurements are 47cm long, 35cm wide and 67.5 cm tall. I would like some more birds when I move out but not a big enough number as to have an avairy as I don't think rental properties would allow you to build an avairy. But i had a look at some really big indoor cages at the pet store yesturday just to get an idea on the price range.
September 30, 200816 yr Hi, you should try and get pairs. If you have more females than males the females will fight. You should also have the same amount of boxes as breeding pares because otherwise the females wiil fight. Edited September 30, 200816 yr by KAZ pairs typo
September 30, 200816 yr Actually Clancy you should have MORE nest boxes than pairs, preferably about double the number
September 30, 200816 yr And that is only if you want to breed. This is my Patio/King Parrot Cage Four Bird go great in here, I know people that have had 6 in this cage but personally I think that is a little on the maximum size. I have had 10 birds in this cage but only for a night (due to high wings and bad weather) but there was A LOT of fighting and a few patch up in the morning so yeah if you want 4 - 6 this is the minimu size I would go.

Cara, I rent and am not allowed to have an aviary, but some places do let you. A nice big indoor cage with plenty of perches, and lots of out of cage time. I'd agree with having more males than females, and a slow introduction as some birds just don't get along and you'd need a back up plan for that... Good luck if and when you decide to go ahead! :bliss: Edited September 30, 200816 yr by maesie Added more
September 30, 200816 yr Also you can sometimes get aviaries with a metal base or you can put a false floor of bricks in them so that they are portable
September 30, 200816 yr If you have more females than males the females will fight. You should also have the same amount of boxes as breeding pares because otherwise the females will fight. There is an article in the FAQ'S regarding Colony breeding - Worth a read Clancy! I agree with MB, AV and Maes
