Hi, I was wondering if I bred Bailey my yellow faced male

With a normal grey female, would that produce yellow faced grey babies if so I will buy a new female, I wanted a new budgie anyway but couldnt think what type.

Yes you will get YF grey budgies when you add a grey hen :) Make sure the hen is NOT YF otherwise they will be DF YF which will cause the face to be white again :(

Yes, potentially. Grey is dominant so you stand a good chance of getting grey chicks (either all gry if she has two grey genes or about 50% if she has one) and then you have about a 50% chance of each chick getting the yellowface gene.

Thanks I just absolutly like the looks of yellow faced grey budgie's :)

Also when you breed do you put the male in first or female and how many days do you have to wait before adding the second bird in, I'm going to try breed Bailey with Sky to get Opaline's.

I just throw them both in and then add the nest box a couple of days later :)

Oh, because I thought you add one then the other.....hey but if that works either way its fine.

Some people put the hen in first but I've always just put them in at the same time :)

So if you put the hen in first how many days do you wait to put the cock in?

He looks seafoam coloured to me, so if added with a hen with YF already you wouldn't get white faced Df's

although to put him to a hen with Yf already would mean you already had a yf grey :P

I put my pairs in at the same time. I think people who put them in seperatly wait 2-3 days or something :s

I dont understand libby could you explain about what you said about the colour

With the excitement of breeding and people saying to put them both in together straight away................remember Jodie has to buy the hen first and that means 30 days minimum quarantine in another cage and another room of the house.

Good point Kaz, plus breeding is not just throwing them in together there are many more aspect and issues that can arise, I think your best bet would be to search around and find yourself a YF Grey personally, why breed when there are birds that need homes too.

the comments about safety and car of budgie and the extra details needed when breeding are not directly posted toward you Jodie, just adding the facts here for others reading that breeding bird isn't a simply matter of adding a box.

Liv stated before that two yf birds will give you df yellowface bird appearing white faced, however your bailey is a yellowface type 2 and this doesn't happen, the offspring will still have yellowfaces. a yellowface type 1 (that has a pure blue body colour) can give white faced babies that are in fact a bird with two yellowface genes.

So if you put the hen in first how many days do you wait to put the cock in?

2-3 days is a aadverage.

males will be split for cinnamon

Yep totally agree with averything Nerwen Said Especailly the vinnamon ( cinny ::P:: part )

Baileys mother is cinnamon

Well that means Bailey is split, so you'll get even more cinnamon in the bubs

and cinnamons of both sexes!

I thought only females could only be cinnamon, or is that its easyer to make a female than a male?

Hit the nail on the head :D

Easier to make a female than it is to make a male

To make a female the cock need only be split and the hen nothing, but to make a male the hen has to be showing cinnamon and the cock has to be atleast split...

so theres a chance of me getting a male if they get chick, then

  • Author
Sure is :D

if theyve mated does that mean theres a chance of chicks they've mated once that I no of and attempted I was going to take Bailey out because he wouldnt leave her alown but he's sort of calmed down. I was worried he'd stess her out, but they seem fine now.

Sure is :)

Budgie sperm lasts about 3 weeks or so, and one mating is all that is needed for an entire clutch (just dont tell the hens the boys secret :D )

If they are going to be a breeding pair, they need to be compatible and together. She cant do it on her own.
