Posted August 5, 200816 yr Remember this grey girl: I have paired her with a big grey boy in the hopes that she would have a successful attempt at breeding. At this stage I have no idea whether they have managed well enough to actually fill the eggs but as of today she is sitting on her first egg I'm proud as punch of her so here's hoping we get some chicks. I'll candle them in about a week and see whether we have any blood vessels starting.
August 5, 200816 yr Author She's just very out of condition in that photo. Either that or it's a VERY confused cock that lays eggs!
August 5, 200816 yr Budgie lover that is because she is out of breeding condition ... Fingers crossed MB, so are my legs, and even my eyes LOL
August 5, 200816 yr Thanks guys, I know some greens are grey greens so I thought the hen beside the grey may have been the bird in mention and was hoping to clear my confusion up. I've got so much to learn- steep, steep curve that learning one!!!!
August 5, 200816 yr keep us updated budgielover, hens can have light blue ceres when they are out of breeding condition this is why some people get them confused with cocks, the rule blue boy is not a good rule to follow
August 5, 200816 yr Thanks Elly, now that you say that I do realize I have a bird (which slip my mind) in my avairy which is a hen whose cere is now paling off and getting a blue haze to it and I thought this meant they were too old for breeding with, not that they were just out of condition and you can still use them for breeding when in condition.
August 5, 200816 yr Author I actually put her in with the cock about a week after that photo so she was still very out of condition. Now about three or four weeks on and I have an egg so it doesn't take them long to get back into it once that nest box appears.
August 5, 200816 yr congrats on the eggs MB, here's hoping that theyare full and your hen is a good mum
August 5, 200816 yr Author She took to it like a duck to water actually I was holding the nest box up to the side of the cage while I was deciding how to attach it best and she was trying to climb into it while I was attaching it I had to push her off the egg earlier so I think she will be a good sitter
August 6, 200816 yr Do you know whether she has ever bred before? It will be interesting to see how many eggs she lays.
August 6, 200816 yr Author As far as I know this is her first clutch so we will see. I may let her have another clutch if she does well this time but then she will most likely be retired as she is nearly four years old
August 6, 200816 yr Author Well she has proved that shes a little SLOW today. Went out to check on her and she was hunkered down in the nest box 'bowl' sitting like a champ, BUT where was the egg? Well it had rolled to the corner of the nestbox and she hadn't noticed I angled the nest box a little so that if she accidentally rolled the egg out again it would naturally roll back towards the bowl again.
