Horse Food For Budgies?

Featured Replies

Posted

I have spoken to some breeders down here and alot of them are using horse food mixed into the seed for Budgies. Wondering if anyone else does that and if so what brand do you use?

I keep hearing about soaked seed, what is this, how do you do it and why?

PVC or PVM or something like that, it's a red powder made from Bricks that I have been told to add to the breeding cages for the birds anyone know anything about this?

Wheatgerm oil, does it really work? How do you and how much do you mix in?

And last but not least, people talk about egg mix, but then I hear how the egg mix that you buy has no real eggs in it. I have never bothered to get it as my guys get fresh eggs (cooked) but is this something that I should look at getting?

One breeder I went to had like seven little tray things full of stuff and was telling me how the water is on a router system so they get something different in the water each day. Another breeder was big on the KISS method and had his breeding pairs on seed only diets. I am trying to find a middle ground.

Horse food I would think that it is either lucene or charf maybe Hay... I wouldn't feed mine this at the moment it is getting expensive to hard feed horses ... The Wheatgerm - I am going to try this , But i haven't yet so no real answer there.. It is mixed in with the seed so that it looks glossy :P i thinkit goes 20mls to 1 kg of seed but you can break it down:D

Soaked seed where you soak your seed for 24 hrs in either water or a solution then feed it after being rinsed. I tried this and well my birds didn't touvh it LOL ...

What the heck is the KISS program???

Lucerne chaff is great in the nest box as a medium in place of sawdust, as the hen and babies can chew it, as it is another form of green food, and it has a slight moisture content which may help with humidity and hatchability, it also helps with the odor from the nest boxes, and has no dust to go into the eyes of the baby chicks. :P

Coprice M horse pellets, you will need to train your adult birds to eat them, but the young birds.

will take to then, with out to much trouble.

I am not sure on the properties of soaked seed really, its supposed to make the seed softer and easier for babies to digest, that is what I have heard. I actually sprout my seed. I have been told sprouted seed is good for protein and the way I see it, seed that has grown just a little bit is veggies too!

I have ordered some HyGain that has the minerals as a powder form not a pellet form. Will see about adding a bit into their diets and see how I go.

Thanks for the advice guys

Oi, I am not stupid... Just slow hahahah -

I like it hahaha ...

LIV WOW never knew that!!!!! Hmmmm I might give it ago!

With horse food it is designed for a horse and my concern would be the protein levels and other levels that may be higher then what would be recommended in budgie food. I don't think I would do it but that is me.

In the raceing pigeons, they feed it during the breeding season, that were I pickeds it up from a pigeon forum,I was reading,It has all the vitums & minerals in the pellets,

The good thing about pellets is that atleast they will have a breakdown of the components on the pack(or you could look it up online) so you should be able to check for issues of protien levels, etc.

Going to check out the levels and adjust amount acorrding. I know that alot of breeders do this down here when I spoke to the company that I am getting it off he told me that he has 5 other breeders that use the same brand. I would only be using it in the breeding cages not in the regular aviary or flights to help give them a boost over the egg laying period. If they hate it and refuse to eat it well I always have a horse who will be happy to get it :P
