Budgie Breeding Boxes

This is a little bit of a funny and a little bit of a warning.

I got my cage set ups from JJ Avairies and I do like them and this is not a negative post about the company or their product.

I got this set up - It's the one with the yellow boxes attached

They are great and my pet types has taken to the cages and boxes like pros I have two pairs who are using the nesting boxes at the moment going in and out and no issues. Well I gave Lemon and Lime (one of my show pairs) a nesting box, she is a ground layer and I really thought she would not be intrested in it but gave it to them anyway to see what happens. Yesterday morning while doing the round I discover her stuck halfway in the box. :) The hole is not big enough for her. I open the box and she is just sitting there going "Well you going to get me out?" Lime is preening her backside. :D

I try and push her backwards and with some angling (and a few more bite marks added to my collection) and we get her out. Removed the box and thought well she is a fat hen.... Then today I go out and my other show pair is stuck, the hen had managed to get in but could not push her way out..... So again her box was removed and I am going to get some other boxes to use.

So my warning is do make sure that the hens can fit in and out of the nest box before you give it to them. Lemon did look funny but the other hen was really upset about not being able to get out to her mate.

I know that it is simple but really I bought Budgie nest boxes I just assumed that the hens would be able to fit.

I would have assumed so too. We have recently bought plastic nest boxes to attach to our breeding cabinets. I have 3 pairs of large show budgies using them with no problems at all.

LOL. I am sorry But it would have been a funny sight and a sad sight all at once ... Try making the hole bigger??

Sunnie plastic ones. Huh, I have never seen them, Got a picture???

Check out the link that I gave the yellow boxes are them they are plastic and great to clean! (Don't tell my sister but I dishwash them!)

My smaller hens are not having an issue and I have one who likes it over the wooden one that I have.

And yes neat it was funny... I wanted to get a camera but also worried about how lemon was doing so she had to come first. :)

I have pics of our breeding cabinets on my home pc, but Im being naughty and BBCing at work :P

I will post them for you later tonight :)

That's what appeals to me AV, being able to clean them so easily and thoroughly between clutches. The ones we have have slides at the front of the nest box, so you can slide the first one up and there is a clear panel behind it so you can see into the box with out actually opening it. Then when you need to have access to the box, you can slide the clear panel up also. Of course, all the nesting material falls out when you do this lol, but the eggs etc would be safe as it has a nice concave in the bottom. It is also vented at the back for air circulation.

Mine have a flip top I think I am going to have to do something about the bottoms however as they do no have a concave....

Thanks for that AV, i checked the holes in mine because i will have show sized birds in there aswell and they were to small so all fixed now, i hope your birds are okay after all that :P

I saw yellow plastic boxes like those on ebay but it said suitable for finches or canaries. Did your supplier know you wanted to use them for budgies?

Just looked and can't find them now they must have all been sold, I was going to get some for our finches.

Denise do your search again and click completed listings :P Then send the person that had an email as they might be putting more on

I checked the completed listing as well MB, I bought some other stuff of him so I'll have to go through my feedback and find his name, probably the easiest way to go. Not in any hurry as our finches have to be moved in with the canaries and their avairy isn't finished yet.......budgies come first :)

LOL Av, :P p.s Link doesn't work

Sunnie Umm Marrrr lol ....
