Black specks and flakes?

Featured Replies

Posted

In the last few weeks I have noticed tiny black flakes and specks on my bird's cage floor (use white paper). I examined the material with my 8X lens and some of it looks like dried skin, but nothing is moving or alive nor do they look like mites. My budgie is aqua, white, and black. Any ideas? :doctor:

Good news is that I just got him to perch on my hand outside the cage to eat! Took a lot of patience, but the retraining from step one is working. :(Laughing out loud):

Brilliant about the training!

I don't know what the specks may be but when I first read your post I wondered about some sort of mite or something as well.I'm sure someone will know.

Hmmm, has he been molting? Maybe it could be parts of the feather sheaths.

I was also going to suggest parts of the feather sheaths. When Blinkie's feathers were coming through there were little white and grey specks wherever he went.

Thanks for the advice! It took me a while to get back into the forum because I lost both my user i.d. and password.

Yes, it does look like feather sheaths, and he is molting a bit. He just went through a big molt and I thought he was through--perhaps the black wing feathers come in a little later.
