Posted August 4, 200816 yr Hi my name is Libby, I am new to this site but have been watching and reading for some time. I have a possible problem with one of my hens that I thought someone may have an idea about what it could possibly be. On the cere of this hen she has what appears to be enlarging (sort of scaley in appearance) of the cere, I thought it may be a mite problem but she doesn't have any of the other symptoms like raised feathers around the edge of her beak. Today she has had a bit of bleeding on her beak and it seems as though bits of it fall off every now and then. I do remember seeing this on her before but until now have just ignored it, none of the other birds with her have any problems. Do you have any thoughts? Libby :hap:
August 4, 200816 yr sounds like scaley face... BUT it is really hard to tell without a photo. If you can post a photo it would be really helpful. Hello and welcome by the way :hap:

August 4, 200816 yr Two things.......scaley face and also a hens cere will flake off after breeding condition. Scaley face appears to show itself in many ways and stages. We are experts on diagnosing scaley face.......so PICTURES please and we can definitely help you here. Good to have you here.....we do have a Libby here already so hope we dont get you two confused
August 4, 200816 yr Howdy and welcome Those pictures should help you pick what it is, or if you have any to upload
August 5, 200816 yr Author okay. below is a Hen in breeding condition Or This is Scaley Face Hi! Sorry it took me a while to work out how to respond to you. Thanks for the pictures, this look a bit different again as I said it is only on the cere. When i caught her today i had a close look and up close it is very warty in appearance(like a rough surface) and is projected as much as the hen in the first picture. I did try to get some photo's but my camera won't zoom in close enough to see what i am talking about. In the mean time unless someone has an idea (i even thought kanka-unsure if that is how you spell it!) i'm going to try something my AG teacher at school used to do and it usually worked (he had about 1000 budgies) and i know it might sound strange or maybe you might of already heard of this before and that is treat it with straight DETOL on a cotton bud. I have seen kanka totally gone within a week from this treatment. Your all probably laughing but it is worth a try. As i said if anyone has any further suggestions of the disease and which medication to use - great!!!!! As soon as i have some photo's of my birds i load them up. Thanks guys, Lib
August 5, 200816 yr Detol can kill a budgie! If she is like the first picture then she is just in breeding condition and not in any need of treatments. As Kaz said she could be going out of condition so her cere is flaking. Personally I would not treat her for anything until you can get a photo up here or you can get her to a vet. The photo you post doesn't have to be really close - we will be able to tell from a little distance (lots of skilled eyes here ). Also if you use a macro setting (a tulip symbol on most cameras) you should be able to get a close clear photo
August 5, 200816 yr OMG do not use STRAIGHT detol .... It needs to be diluted if you are going to use it which I wouldn't ... If you are going to use anything try Olive Oil!!! Or carfuly use vasoline .... I say this because you think about it you smell straigt detol pretty strong isn't - Now times that by 100 and that is whay your bird will smell the fumes will affect it badly leading to sinus issues, if not death... + We as humans can not use straight detol it states on the bottle to be dilute man that stuff stings when put on to a sore If she is like the first picture or flakey she is FINE if anything along the lines of the other too it is scaley face
August 5, 200816 yr As people say don't use straight Detol. I use it to clean cages with but it is like half a cap full to 2L water! Also all cages are dried and aired before a bird gets back in them. Really need a picture or you can try the oil olive trick. Will not hurt the bird if she is just in breeding condition just amke sure you don't cover her tiny nostrials (sp?) as I believe that birds can not breath out thier mouth.

I have managed to get a couple of photo's from through the bars of the cage but I may have to get some better ones I just have to find my cable now to upload the photo's (always something). Can you tell me the easiest way to upload the pictures. I also have some photo's of my other birds and was wondering if someone could tell me the right names for the colours and the wing feathers as well. Thanks, Lib
