Petting a budgie

Featured Replies

Last night I was sitting playing with Gemini. I started gently rubbing the side of his neck, and he crooked his head over to one side (like a dog would do when you hit the right spot!). When I rubbed the other side he crooked his head over again. Every time I do this I get the same reaction from him! Is this a sign that he enjoys his neck being rubbed? Does anyone else's budgies do this? Thanks!

Ann &

Oh yes that sure is a sign he LOVES it! They look like they're in ecstasy don't they!

Birdy does it to Budgy2 but never the other way round!

Julie

Oh yes they love it i did that once and it like it soo much it was like having and o****m if you know what iean it was making this weird noises and isn't ectasy a drug?

My baby birdie Blinkie loves it too. He flops sideways like a dead birdy and fall asleep. It was scary at first but it's just him going into some kind of weird relaxed state. Mabye like those people who meditate? :D

imotive, ecstasy is a state of extreme happiness. julie meant it as in the figure of speech way. also do you always have to use sexual imagery? :D sorry (Laughing out loud), but you seem to go on about it a lot for a boy of such a young age.

Ann, you're really lucky! A lot of budgies aren't very tolerant to being petted, but if yours is, then you can consider yourself blessed :D

Oh sorry truely I never swear or say such things at school thats why i even put the stars between becasue if someone didn't know already they wouldn't have to horro of seeing it sorry if it bothered anybody.

Merlin doesnt like it!

Pixie i agree with you. Imotive, you have to remember that there are people of all ages who can look at this board, and though you "censored" the word, I wouldnt think it was approriate language for a budgie board...

It?s so nice when they play with you and stuff one of mine jumps on my head and fly?s away then comes straight back

So cool

i think they just love you to 'preen' the areas that they cant reach themselves! under the chin, side of the face and top of the head seem to be firm favourites!

I have found the Gemini loves it while on the other hand Ginger hates it! (Laughing out loud), guess you have to bend to their personal favorites!

Ginger may start to like being scratched when she becomes more tame. Maybe she thinks your trying to hurt her. But as you said, each budgie has their favourite spots. My first budgie Tweety hated being petted anywhere except her belly. Blinkie however loves to be hugged and kissed and stroked all over! ;)

Everytime I try to pet Cloudy on his/her stomach she always steps onto my finger and i never taught her/him to do that any ideas on how to stop it!

None of mine have ever liked to be patter on the head or anywere althought Marine is starting to like a but of a stroked on the chest.

Imotive- cloudy think that is what you are asking, to teach a bird to 'step up' you push on their belly, if you want to pat him/her then try up a bit higher.

(Laughing out loud). Believe me, you don't want to stop it! Reinforce it if anything. When Cloudy does this, say "Step up." It's a good thing for them to know. And it's just natural for her to get on your finger when you touch her stomach. It makes them feel off balance so they jump onto your finger to steady themselves.

A lot of budgies (most in fact) don't like being petted or stroked. Piper liked it when she was younger but now she'd much rather hang out with me, preen my hair, etc.

Stepping up is a good thing. Piper knows it so well that when she accidentally flutters to the floor all I have to do is call her name and offer my hand and she hops up. Being pet just isn't natural for them. If you want a more physical way to interact with your budgie you should gently caress her beak between your fingers. This is closer to the feeling of another budgie's beak which is a more natural sensation for her. If she doesn't like this, then maybe just settle for a mostly hands-off relationship. Unlike cockatoos or cockatiels, adult budgies aren't usually cuddly parrots.

Step up is a useful command but i understand how you feel. Blinkie sometimes steps onto my finger when i stroke his belly and it can be a bit annoying! ;) It's just them trying to balance themselves when they step up after pressure is applied to their tummy. I really don't think there is a way to stop them doing this. :) But it is seriously a useful command for Cloudy to know. :)

Definitely reinforce "step up"! Sometimes mine will fly away when I try to get them, and it is usually because I forget to say "step up". They are so patterned to do it that even if they have been 'running off', if I tell them to "step up" they will comply 99% of the time, even if they don't want to. They will ignore me sometimes unless I give the verbal command.

imotive- maybe you should just try and pet cloudy's stomach softer? To stop her feeling as if she has to step up?

I've been finding step up really useful lately!!! When Blinkie decides to fly to the other side of the room i just call "Come here Blinkie!" and when he comes over i say "up up" and he just jumps straight onto my finger. Saves me the trouble of chasing him around!!!
