Posted August 2, 200816 yr How do you guys find the greygreen(GG) works? I know its a colour but do you find/or is it more dominant? In my nest atm from a GG/ light green pair I have 4 GG chicks (coming along nicely I may add ) Now I was hoping for some light greens but no luck. So it just got me thinking- not much else to do at this time of the morning! Maybe the lack of sleep and a hungry little person has affected my brain and somewhere deep down in there somewhere I do know the answer but its not coming to me now!!
August 2, 200816 yr Hi Pie…I think it’s pretty Dominant, it’s the same as Grey, They say if your not careful with Grey they will Dominate your aviary. I seem to have got a large number of them already in my aviary, but maybe that’s because they are often nice big birds & lots of the better type birds I have bought have been Grey Greens. Having said that, even if you mate a Grey green with a Light Green you should get a proportion of Lights, just that all breeding isn’t as simple as getting one of one type & one of the other, often in my experience you get batches or runs of a certain colour or Mutation expected, then it can switch & you will get a run of other colours. I have often had a pair have something like three of one colour in a batch then even if you breed them a few more times you don’t get that colour again. All percentages are taken over large numbers of birds bred & we often only take small numbers from our pairs.
August 3, 200816 yr Author Cheers NOrm- late night last night!! I was guessing with the added grey it might work slightly different. The percentages thing I understand well as it took about 4 clutches from a d.pied/normal (both greens) pairing to get a pied bird- and a blue one at that!! Then they were throwing them in all clutches at a ratio of 3:2 The young are looking well so far so I may let them go for round 2 and hopefully they keep improving through the moult.
August 3, 200816 yr A good indicator is...every one of the 46 birds I brought home from the show breeder were grey green type birds
August 3, 200816 yr I agree it's very dominant the grey colour I have a grey Df crest bred cock to a violet hen, out of 2 clutches so far every single baby has been a grey spangle
August 4, 200816 yr Don't forget it is a single factor and a double factor gene so if the bird is a double factor your % is 100% that all the chicks in the nest will have the added factor but only 50% if it is a single factor.
