I have a hen that laid just the one egg 6 days ago, she has got poo all over it and it doesn't appear to be fertile. They have been mating daily for about 2 weeks.

 

She is not egg bound, there is no egg bum and not even the big poos before the eggs are laid, she justs seemed to have stopped at the one egg?

 

Do I take the egg out or leave and see what happens?

If it doesnt look fertile Id take it and let them try again

Might be best to remove the nestbox all together and give her a chance to recover strength, get really healthy for 2 weeks, then reintoruduce the nest box.

She has been sitting on the egg but it is definitely clear. She is in good condition, I took her out this afternoon to check her all over.

I removed the clear egg and she laid another egg later that night and another since and 3rd one is due today, so I don't know what went on with the first one?

 

I think I just have strange birds :hap:

Angle did this Laid 1 egg 4 days later laid another and every 3rd day laid until she got to 7 this is why my chicks are older then the others inthe clutch

She didn't lay another egg yesterday so I'll see if the 2 she has are fertile or clear and decide then whether to give up on her or try again.

 

The 8 pair I have down now I am just playing around with, they are birds that I haven't tried before that I bought when older or the others I tried last year with no results so I'm not expecting anything outstanding to come from them.
