Posted March 6, 200520 yr Hi I have a problem with a yellow regressive pied budgie she is four years old. The problem is when I mate her to a male bird she starts off okay and lays four to six eggs and sits on them but after about two weeks she starts to pull her feathers out and does her droppings in the nesting box like a baby bird. I have tried her with two different males but the problem is the same with different males. Is there anyway I can stop this or do I just give up. The thing is she is a very nice bird see picture included
March 9, 200520 yr I have looked all over the net and found little on the problem. I just thought one of you guys or girls might have more experience than me and would know of a way to fix this problem. Thanks anyway and have a nice day.
March 9, 200520 yr I thik its a hormonal thing they act meaner and things the problem begins if she eats the eggs like mine does. She may also know they are infertile and won't give a hoot, but have you candled the eggs yet. Unless you aren't experienced you shouldn't do it though as for the feather pulling out thing it is hromonal and if you want not to make a second post you can edit the first one and write too!
March 9, 200520 yr imotive please dont post if you are guessing at the answers but have you candled the eggs yet. Unless you aren't experienced you shouldn't do it though it is very easy to candle just hold a small pen torch against the egg if you see veins after about 4 days it is fertile as for the feater plucking it could be bordom try putting some millet or a piece of wood for the bird to chew in the nest the box

It is all a matter of trying different permutations. Good Luck. Harry.o0.
March 9, 200520 yr Hath I wasn't guessing actually my friend who had a budgie witha female once (now dead) was taking out the egg and his hand crushed the egg and there was veins very sad! The proper way to hold it i at the tips because thats where the most weight can be exerted without causing a break!
March 9, 200520 yr you should not take the egg out to candle it the last thing i would advise is to touch the egg

March 9, 200520 yr Well it never happened to me...I only did it once when i had to find out why my female was eating the eggs and i found out they were all infertile 2 clutches in a row!

March 9, 200520 yr one of the biggest reason for dead in shell is bacteria passed from fingers onto the eggs
March 10, 200520 yr Thanks for the help guys & girls I seam to have stirred up more activity in the forums than I have in the nest. I did the pen torch thing with my first lot but was not game to touch my show budgies as I was afraid of damaging there eggs. I will try the peace of wood in the box and some saw dust at the moment in Australia we are going into autumn and this is the best time of year for breading as the temperature stays at around 27c I will try this bird with my aggressive **** bird maybe she will be too interested in him to worry about pulling feathers out. I get very sad when I find dead chicks in the nest as even the smallest thing deserves to live. So again thanks to everyone for there kind advise.
