My baby hen is getting all growed up. Kazoo is about 6 months and her cere is darkening from pink to brown. Is this significant for any reason other than age?

She is just growing up :hap:

My Latte is going though the same change :hap:

Hens will also change from brown, to blue white, to tan, to brown again, as they go in and out of breeding condition throughout their life :)

Interesting Liv, thanks! So which colour signifies readiness for breeding, blue-white?

Brown is in breeding condition, tan is going in or out of condition and white/blue is out of condition

Cere colour and "breeding condition" is not to be confused with old enough or ready to breed. They can have "breeding condition" ceres at 3-4 months sometimes but still should not be bred until age 12 months.

Perish the thought! I work full-time as a clinician, so have no intentions of breeding these two - Unless they want to lay eggs in their food dish, there is nothing to entice them, either. Good for others to know though, and good to know about the colour, thanks Liv and Kaz, I want to understand my babes as best I can...
