Posted July 28, 200817 yr Just thought you might like a picture of my two guys. Taming is coming along well, found it is harder with two then one but once out they love to explore, only issue is that Buddy has taught Boof to chew and now both of them love to sit on my shoulders and chew my hair! Or feed each other which is a strange sound right near your ear! Also the funny little honking sound that they do. Buddy has also worked out that if he runs across my back I shiver and he then holds on and flaps like mad... strange little fellows!
July 28, 200817 yr had to jump into the post lol and say what a cute pictures they look very happy and settled
July 28, 200817 yr Author they are, Boof is not 100% sure about his wings clipped but as he spent a while in the aviary I figured it would be the safest way to help him adjust otherwise it might be a nightly version of catch the Budgie. Elly you might be able to help me with this. I can't get either of them to step up, they show no intrest and actively run away from my hand and/or pole when I attempt to do this. However when I (for lack of a better word) grab them out of their cage they are happy to run all over me will jump up on my hands while I type play on my desk so I know it's not a fear thing they just sort of go... "are you serious mum? If you want me then you need to grab me, cuddle me and then let me go on your desk" it's just a bit fustrating and they look half wild and scared when I catch them from their cage but after that they are cool. I know it's early days more so for Boof then Buddy and they don't get handled as much as I would like but still any tips would be great.
July 28, 200817 yr Sweet Boys. Good luck with your taming. I'm about to start taming some inside budgies as well, but mine are about 6 weeks old
July 28, 200817 yr Do they like millet AV? If so what you do is run the millet on the table slowly and let them get a few bites and then put your hand flat on the table and run the millet over them and then before they can have the millet they have to cross your hand to get the millet. Slowly after they do that you can start with raising your hand and when you jump up you say good boy and give it to them then you start working with the finger. It is fear, because you have grabbed them with your hand they see it as nothing good from your hand (not you). Once you let them go it is all done and they love you but the remember the hand grabbing them and no bird likes to be grabbed. So I suggest to stop the grabbing and work with fingers and millet to get them to trust your hand. I know this from experience with Pretty, I grabbed him a couple times and then the only way he would come to me is on his own according or if I had millet I had to erase the grabbing memory it take a week BUT don't do it again and be patience or you will be at square 1 again. July 28, 200817 yr Author See this is what is strange, they LOVE their millet and will jump up on my hands when I give it to them outside of the cage it's just the getting them out of the cage that is the issue, will work with the millet in the cage and see how I go, thanks.
July 28, 200817 yr okay, they then have associated your hand with bad in the cage so you need to do this, they only come out once they jump on your hand work with the millet in your hand, I know what you are going through the same thing happened with Pretty and I because I didn't realize what I had done. All you have to do is grab them like once and they associate it in the cage. You can feed the the millet only when they have jumped on your hand OR you can put your hand right where they come out and have the millet there where they have to jump on your finger to come out. It is not that you can't teach them step-up it is that they associate grabbing in the cage which makes them freak.
August 11, 200817 yr Author Updated** More picture's first Also putting up a vid but it is taking FOREVER TO LOAD! Elly also step up is sort of working, now if they don't step up then they don't get to come out and they get millet if they come out so they are a little stand offish but will get the gist of it. I am going to have to change their cage around as Buddy just chews EVERYTHING in sight!
August 11, 200817 yr AV, it is interesting that buddy's bars haven't receded at all yet. His sisters had begun to recede when she was only about 7 weeks old.
August 11, 200817 yr Author here is the vid. MB I was thinking that the other day, he also really likes to sleep alot like a baby he feel asleep on the millet tonight and Boof just pushed him over to get to the millet under him poor boy! It's like the gap between then is getting bigger and bigger as Boof is really starting to grow up and Buddy is still that naughty little chick... he just is a late bloomer!
August 11, 200817 yr they are so cute together, glad the training is working be consistant budgies know how to work us
August 12, 200817 yr Author Thanks Elly that is what I am trying to do. They are really good about stepping up when they are out of their cage are happier to step onto a cupped hand rather then a finger and love climbing as high as they can and then lauching themselves off with a flurry. I believe they are trying to reach the holy grail of Millet which is kept on a box on the bed in the study!
