Any One Breed Cockatiels?

Featured Replies

Posted

My first pair of cockatiels have just started to breed and have 2 eggs already. Just wondering if there's any special requirements for them during the breeding season. I am presuming they will need the usual things like fruit, veg, cuttlefish, etc. I have put Calcivet in their water, anything else??

I breed tiels sometimes. (discreetly points to link in signature ;) )

Sounds good to me - They need the same food and vitimins as breeding budgies :)

Thanks Liv. Your tiels are so cute! ;)

Tiels can be bred in a colony, just like budgies. There are just more issues... just like budgies hehe. Cabinet breeding is better ;)

I'd like to breed some of my tiels but I'm guessing the cabinets would be a lot larger than budgie cabinets so I don't think I really have the space ;) Would one of my 70cm long flight cages be big enough for a pair of tiels?

mmm Not really MB.. normally its at least a meter long for cabinet breeding.

That's what I figured, ah well, maybe I'll transfer a couple of pairs that get along well to the small aviary and try my luck with a small colony.

Thanks Liv, sorry to hijack Jenene ;)

Thanks everyone. My wonderful partner built these aviaries for me a few years ago! Am I spoilt or am I spoilt?? :hap:

I breed Cockatiels myself, I have read if you breed them colony style you should have at least three pairs, if your aviary is big enough. My aviaries are about three metres long two metres high & 900mm wide. But I have found it better to breed a pair to the aviary. They are different in one way than Budgies, I found it’s the males that are the problem, you always have a Dominant one, that’s why they recommend at least odd pairs as if only two one male will hound the other. I had one male that killed the other pairs female because he wanted her & she didn’t want him. I noticed it but before I could remove her it was too late.

I can't see the picture of your avairy, as others seem to...I don't know why but some pictures don't download for me.

Try again Norm, I have re-sized it, it was too large

I couldnt help myself - I just had to check the nest box! There's 3 eggs so far!!!! :hap: :D

Congrats on the 3 eggs. I breed cockatiels as well and like Liv said they are pretty much the same as budgies. They share incubation between the male and the female more than they do in Budgies pretty even on that one. I decieded to colony breed last year. Will never do it again. I had 2 females constantly fighting over nestboxes the males seem to keep out of it but the girls got really nasty and even hurt a couple of chicks. I offered them 4 nestboxes between the 2 pairs, all at the same height and they wanted the same one. At first I thought maybe it was just the corner but after moving the nestbox I quickly learnt it wasn't the corner but infact the box itself! After the fighting started to get worse and the chicks got injured I immedinetly moved the birds into cabinents and that seemed to have fixed the problem. You have a stunning aviary wish mine looked as good as that!

Thanks LisaVenn. I had a feeling there might be some friction if I colony bred. I usually only have one pair no matter what type of parrot to an aviary.

I see it now it looks a great complex. Egg inspection is not a problem with them, they will hiss & sway, but they wont desert or anything like that. The hen sits at night the male during the day.

I just love how the cocks share in the incubation! It's really sweet. ^_^

Three eggs ^_^ Yay!!

I am so pleased you have them on their own as i colony bred last year and it was a disaster!! :(

Only about a week to 10 days before I have baby cockatiels!! I checked the nest a few days ago and there are 5 eggs but only 3 look fertile. Dad does day shift and Mum does night shift. B)
