wonder if anyone can give me some advise?

Ive lost 2 hens this week both who seem to be spending time in the breeding box. No eggs in the box ..just in and out of the box.No signs that they were unwell, just found dead on the bottom of the aviary ?

It is virtually impossible for us to determine what they died of.

 

What condition were they in? If they are not in top condition, the stress can be too much.

 

We cannot possibly determine if they had a viral infection or a pre-existing condition.

 

If you had of taken them to an avian death within hours of their deaths they could have determined a cause of death, maybe allowing you to treat the rest of your aviary.

 

regardless of what it was, i would remove all birds from breeding boxes, and treat them all for those standard illness

as Dave said, it can be very difficult to determine cause of death.

 

Some other causes include....

Mice/rats getting to the birds food and water can kill an entire flock overnight.

Wild birds that can poop though the wire can bring nasty diseases to your flock.

Lack of food in the cold weather can kill birds as they need food to maintain body heat.

and there are many more......

 

I hope you find the cause and don't have any more deaths.

Sorry to hear about your losses.

It can be very dissapointing and frustrating.

 

Were they new birds?

Do you know how old the hens were? Had they bred before?

Were the nest boxes new or clean had you cleaned them with any chemicals?

Were there any signs of dirty vent, or brown nasal discharge?

Were they overweight or thin, did their rib cage feel very boney?

 

Do the cocks they were paired to seem okay?
