Posted July 24, 200816 yr Hi everyone Here are some photos of charlie my baby bird. :parrot: Edited July 24, 200816 yr by Marlo & Charlie
July 24, 200816 yr What an adorable budgie It looks like a hen (female) to me, but i am not always right. Charlie is a Yellow Faced, type 2, recessive pied - very pretty. I would say that s/he is about 5-6 weeks old. Have you seen him eat yet???
July 24, 200816 yr Charlie is adorable as Liv says recessive pied. I think a boy. The first photo looks female but all the other photos looks male. Suggestion...swap the large bowl of water for a drinker...less chance of drowning and babies do drown. The perch is too far from the water to. If you have a drinker and situate it at the end of the perch he will find it easier. Very young bird...so keep its perches, food and water lower down the cage, nearly at ground level for awhile. With budgies...their bottom is a sign of good or bad health...so any changes in poops and mucky bottom is a sign that needs attention. Bit like a fever in a child. As he is very young you must be absolutley sure he is eating as they can pretend to eat and the next thing you know they are seriously sick. Watch out for draughty conditions in or around the cage. Thanks for the photos...they are great Edited July 24, 200816 yr by KAZ

We think the bird was out of the nest at least a day or 2 before we got Charlie. We have had Charlie for a week now and it loves to fly around and is really chirpy!!! It is doing lots of poo, is that a good sign?

July 24, 200816 yr This is what his poop will look like if he is not eating well Healthy budgie poop is small round back/green deposit, with a white dot in the center. p.s Kaz is the queen of telling gender so Charlie would be a boy Edited July 24, 200816 yr by **Liv**

July 24, 200816 yr Author This is a picture of Charlie's poo but Mum said its actually a bit darker greener than that. Edited July 24, 200816 yr by Marlo & Charlie
July 24, 200816 yr He!! IS beautifulNow have you feed him any greens lately???? Grass, gum leaves, spinich or veggies? This somtimes can cause the poo to change??P.S I love the photo of the cat looking at LUNCH lol -But - I just re read the whole post. Sorry i am a skimper , is he always that fluffy? Also 1 - 2 days isn't long enough and the person that you got Charlie from should have known that the babies still need their mum and dad to feed them for at least another week after they come out of their nest ....Still very pretty Edited July 24, 200816 yr by Neat
July 24, 200816 yr Author Charlie is just gorgeous! He is so cute! Thanks for the comment on Charlie Jenene!! Charlie is really annoying because he chirps alot of the time !!! LOL !!! When we bring him out all he wants to do is fly!! LOL
July 24, 200816 yr As Neat says the person you got Charlie from should not have sold him so soon from the nest. Now you and your Mum must be very sure he is eating well and doesnt get sick as he is having to learn to cope without his parents sooner than he should have. Warmth is good to help them feel happy and healthy. If you could have a lamp next to his cage with a 25 to 40 watt globe to shed some warmth near him, he would like that....just for a little while. Re the poops. If runny and bright green its not good. If not so runny and darker green with white all is well.
July 24, 200816 yr By the look of the photos Charlies cage is outside - do you bring him inside of a night?? He is at a big risk of getting chilled, frightened by cats etc.
July 24, 200816 yr That poop on the perch looks good I agree that he should be kept warmer at the moment. a light is great for providing heat. You can also keep his cage half covered with a thick cloth to keep out the droughts. If he is use to being outside then he will be able to deal with the cold better than a bird that is used to being inside. To me he looks a little fluffed (which means he is struggling to keep warm) , so i would recommend a warm lamp (like Kaz said) and a some time inside out of the cold.
July 24, 200816 yr Hi Marlo just would like to know if you have cliped his wings? It looks like you have from the pics
July 24, 200816 yr Author My mum is going to post a comment for me.Hi everyone. Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to Marlo. She is sooooo excited about having a budgie, she's wanted one for a long time! When I came across this site the other day I knew it would be a great place for her to be able to chat to other ppl and learn what she needs to know about budgies. I rang the lady tonight that we got him from (I'll refer to Charlie as a 'he'). She said he was about 6-7 weeks old and had been out of the nest for a few days, she's not sure exactly how long he was out but she said she watched him and saw that he was feeding well on his own. Anyway, he's eating plenty and every day there are loads of husks, his poop looks the right colour and consistency and he seems very bright and healthy so far.We are going to take Kaz's advice and move the perches and I had actually said to Marlo that we needed a feeder because I thought the bowl in the cage was too big. In fact the cage itself is way too big but she bought it off ebay on the rare occasion that i went out when the girls are home! I haven't been able to get to a pet shop/suppliers as yet, its a 70km round trip to the next town but I plan on taking the girls tomorrow night. Marlo's probably going to want to buy every single toy in stock!! LOLThe cage is not usually outside, that was only for the purpose of taking a few pics in natural daylight. He is not normally fluffy like he is in a couple of those pics. He lives inside, in the loungeroom where the coonara heater is (its our only form of heating where we live - no natural gas yet!) but once the weather warms up then I'll put him outside a bit more....somewhere away from the cat! We've taken note of all your advice and I'll keep a close eye on him but so far he seems to be doing very well. He has a swing now and absolutely loves it! I have read in another thread about the bells so am mindful of that too. I think the one on the swing will have to go, Im not sure how to tell what its made out of though.Im sure Marlo's going to be around often, asking you all lots of questions....I have told her to remember the FAQ section before she jumps on and starts asking random stuff. I hope she doesnt wear your patience! LOLThanks again for showing Marlo so much kindness,Marlo's Mum :)Yes, his wings were clipped when we got him. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?? July 24, 200816 yr Bell: The brass ( orange looking one) are the ones YOU DON'T WANT! Silver ones are fine .. I am still buying my birds toys LOL - Sounds like you guys are doing a WONDERFUL job! there is no such thing as too many questions or pictures Wings being clipped, They were clipped to young we like well I do , like to have my birds learn to fly before they get clipped . Clipped wings are great when taming a bird - I wish you Marlo and Charlie the Best of happiness with each other ... Enjoy
July 24, 200816 yr Hi Marlo and MUM!!! It is a pleasure to have you both (especially Marlo) aboard. It's great she is wanting to know how to properly care for Charlie. A big cage is GREAT... more room for him to fly around and stretch his wings (when he doesn't get out). As for toys, you need to weary of bells (as you've already mentioned). Mirrors are also a big no no. He'll get attached to it and wont bond so much with you. Also look carefully at all the toys and try not to get ones where he could get his toes stuck... most are okay, you just need to be careful. It's also good to have a variety of them and switch them around. You can also make your own, with pony beads, untreated wood/natural branches, paper etc... I'm sure you'd enjoy doing that. Once again welcome and feel free to ask anything. Charlie is absolutely adorable and I'm sure will become a special member of your family.
July 24, 200816 yr Charlie looks beautiful i only ask about the wings cause it looks you might have taken abit to much off, i tend to leave the last 2 or 3 feathers ( the longest ones at the outer edge of the wing) so that the little bub doesn't go splat when it does try to fly. It is good idea to clip them when you are trying to tame them but i don't think it is really needed after that (they need to fly to be healthy and happy) it is a good idea to put the perches front to back in the cage instead of side to side so they can fly between them and he would love some natrual wood perchs so he can chew on them and exercise his little feet please anyone correct me if i am wrong about the wings Edited July 24, 200816 yr by charlie2479
July 24, 200816 yr Good to hear all is well with Charlie....thats just great There is no such thing as a cage too big, so if it big and he can have a ball in there just leave it as it is. Toys....yes there are some dreadful one. No bells, nothing reflective as the boys fall in love with "objects" and later on regurgitate to the toys and other naughty things. Try and avoid copper bells too. They love the linked plastic rings and wooden ladders. I tend to put bright coloured plastic bangles around the perches for them to play with. Little basket weave kind of balls to pick up and throw around. When shopping for budgie products try not to get talked into things you dont need as petshops do that to people shopping for their birds. Fpr instance...you dont need a nesting box for Charlie to sleep in or anything to sleep in. You dont need sandpaper sheets for the bottom of the cage and you dont need grit. A calcium bell or iodine calcium bell is good. If as you said his food is in a large dish....budgies dont fossick down deep for their food under the top layer, so smaller dishes filled morning and night would be better and for young ones...shallow trays or shallow food dishes. Try him on some homemade eggfood...recipes to be found in our food and nutrition section. Its when they are young they will try anything new. Mashed boiled egg, finesliced greens, grated carrot etc. So glad to have you all here.
July 24, 200816 yr Welcome i will wave you to and Charlie as I drive past on my way to PI this weekend Good advice all round from everyone, you may be a little in overload but trust me just take it one day at a time and check out the FAQ section. Charlie is very cute i am sure you two are going to have lots of fun together
July 24, 200816 yr That is great news that Charlie is doing really well Personally I think his wings are fine - I don't like to leave the long feathers as they can get tangled in the cage wire and normally end up all messy. I hope you have the best fun buying toys for him. My birds favorite toys are, clothes pegs, pony beads threaded on stainless steel wire, raffia threaded through plastic practice gulf balls etc. Also they love the rings and swings. There is no need to spend a lot of money - they are a bit like babies, give them an expensive toy and they would much rather play with the box hahaha Edited July 24, 200816 yr by **Liv** spelling
