Dec Vs Df Spangle

Hi All,

Just wondering if there is a way to tell the difference between the above mutations in a young bird? I know ultimately the DF Spangle with develop iris rings.

I've located a young pure white bird that doesn't have red eyes and would be very interested if it is a DF Spangle!!

Thanks for your help.

a DF spangle will get iris rigs as it reaches about 8 months of age. I believe a DEC (dark eyed clear) will not get iris rings... Dont hold me to it though as i am often wrong in this area B)

DEC cere donot change in males ,DEC Eyes will be Dark Plum and stay Dark plum ( not to be confised with PLUM)

Some DF feet aren't blue ?

Well the KEY is the parents unless the parents are carrying both genes. If you don't have spangle parents then it would be a DEC  but if you didn't breed them everything that was said above is true. As for the blue feet Neat I heard that really doesn't go with this or that mutation but maybe I am wrong.

Well I've bought it! I can't tell if it is male or female, so will post some pics when I pick up on Wednesday!

Thanks for your replies!

A DEC will retain no cere colour in a male, it's feet will stay pink, due to the pied genes and it will gain not Iris rings as it grows older.

DF spangle will get a blue cere if male, can have non pink feet and will get iris rings.

Well here are the pics! Would love everyone's opinion on whether you think DEC or DFS (definitely no red eyes there) and sex as I have no idea!!

Thanks for your help, I look forward to your replies.

Well you have a cobalt normal cock and what I would say is a DF spangle hen.

Going by age of the two and presuming they're from the same place then the other baby you'd expect to show signs of pied gene for the other bub which is probably it's sibling to be a DEC.

From birds you can get Df spangles from you can still get normals from, so that would be my guess

Great pictures By The Way, lovely and clear, both gorgeous birds :D

okay , I am going to say DEC Purely due to the colour of it's beak and because Libb said DF LOL, so I don't want to be a copy cat :D lol....

The bird looks very young to me, but i cannot tell what it is. You will hae to wait a little longer til it gets to the stage of being old enough to have iris rings

I agree here with Dave I would wait and see what happens with the cere and iris rings.

They are both cocks too.

Yeah But that takes time Elly we need to know now :hap:

But that is the only way we are going to know though

okay now......

After reading up on sexing baby budgies, I'm happy to go with the cobalt normal being male, but what is everyone's opinions on the white bird?? To me now, that looks female, judging by the white (very slighty bluish) rings around the nostrils....?

Would love to know what everyone thinks!

Do you have updated pics? I still say male per the pics above.

nice bird...it is past the stage of when a DF spangle can have plum eyes as that is in the nest. looks like you will have to wait a few months and keep an eye out for the rings. Your cobalt blue is a boy the other is a bit either or but I would lean to male

Sad news...sad0116.gif

The white budgie died over the weekend....it just seemed to slow down and stop, hadn't even named the poor thing.

Very upsetting, was really hoping for a DF Spangle too...

Awwwww. Sorry to hear of your loss, Was it fluffled ???? or green???

Sorry to hear you lost your new budgie. It's distressing and puzzling when they just go for no apparent reason. :)

I've no idea what caused it, the normal cobalt I got at the same time is fine.

It did just start to fluff up and not do anything. They were even getting the royal treatment being kept inside, as it is so cold at the moment!
