Posted July 24, 200816 yr Hi guys some advice please? i have some breeding boxes from last year that i cleaned but they need to be disinfected, what is the best thing to use? Edited July 24, 200816 yr by KAZ
July 24, 200816 yr Mine are made from wood so I can't really disinfect, I just clean out as much as possible
July 24, 200816 yr I agree that wood is tricky to clean - If they get too bad you just replace them. I use vinegar to clean cages and dishes though Edited July 24, 200816 yr by maesie spelling :-)
July 24, 200816 yr As stated vinegar should be good, but I often use normal household bleach, even on wooden boxes & then air them in the sun, it doesn't build up & should kill most things.
July 24, 200816 yr Author thanks guys i thought about bleach but wasn't sure cause of them being so sensitive to chemicals
July 24, 200816 yr As long as you leave them out in the sun to dry and air ot until the smell is pretty much gone they'll be fine We used to use stringer chemicals than that to disinfect at he vet clinic I worked at
July 24, 200816 yr I know a few show breeders who "flame" their nestboxes and breeding cages. Blowtorch for breeding cabinets...rolled up newspaper set alight and inside for the nestboxes. But timing is KEY to this exercise...you dont want to burn completely the boxes nor set the house on fire

July 24, 200816 yr LOL you told me that too Kaz, a while back I use coopex it is a mite treatment which kills everything, I sand the base if needed and paste the mix all over it especailly in the corners
July 24, 200816 yr Author cool i never thought of sanding the base, i might give it a go cause there is always those stuborn spots of poop that wont come off and yes i would love to keep my eyebrows and my hair for that matter (trust me i could do it)
July 24, 200816 yr LMAO :fear that is why I didn't do it My luck I would burn it all That would be the ultimate sterilisation Neat…not many bugs left after that.
