Posted July 23, 200816 yr Me agian, sorry I am full of questions this morning I was reading a few members post whotalk about holding their chicks for 10mins each time they are handled to get them use to it and for easier taming? So my question to you is HOW? 10 mins a chick if the nest has 5 - 6 babies, that is 1 hour of holding babies? So, Do you bring the nest boxes inside? or stay out there? Can anyone shed some light on this?? Thanks soo much

July 23, 200816 yr Hi Neat I handle all my chicks of a night (or whenever I have lots of spare time). I take them out of the nest one at a time and bring them up inside and handle them. The mothers dont mind as long as you put them back! They usually try and find somewhere to hide like inside the sleeve of your jumper but eventually they will be comfortable in your hands. If you do this everyday for 20 minutes or more if you've got the time they will become very tame.
July 23, 200816 yr Personally, I held the bubs in the aviary. I like the parents to watch so they get used to me and realize that i am not there to hurt their babies - The bubs only come inside when i need to treat the for something or when they are starting to fly.
July 23, 200816 yr If there are lots of chicks I hold them two at a time (six chicks means only 30mins), my chicks are inside the house though so I don't have that same trouble. Also my oldest son is happy to be on chick holding duty and will sit quietly and hold one while watching TV, etc
July 24, 200816 yr I dont remove chicks from nests or take the nests away. I dont want to risk parents stopping their care of babies. Any handling and holding of babies happens in the nest or just outside of it with parents watching. One chicks at a time. I dont time it, the chicks just get handled every time the nest is checked. When there are babies a nest is checked morning and night and if any are in trouble its checked more often. What you do all depends on the age of the babies too. Edited July 24, 200816 yr by KAZ
July 24, 200816 yr I grab the bunch out and put them in my lap, either out back or inside, depends on weather temps In winter i cuddle them, in summer i bathe them to cool them down
July 24, 200816 yr Author okay, Mine are located outside, and Due to Dylan being a 2 year old Mischeif he can't come in as he opens the doors to the avairy Grrrrr .. I handle the bubs when he is Sleeping...So i have at least 20mins with them all. I check on them in the morning When Dylan and Tj are eating Breakfast and Talia can keep a quick eye on Dylan lol ... They also get a quick check in the Afternoon too , when dave isn't doing night shifts So I am okay doing what I am doing, I'd hate for the mother/s to stop taking care of them that is why i didn't want to bring the nestbox inside, or the babies - ( But i was thinking with Angels lot I could bring the older ones in while she is caring for the younger ones) ... I could wait until they were alittle older ( 3 - 4 weeks) and bring them and dad in side so he can still feed them and I can have constant contact with them??? Yeah?
