Posted July 23, 200816 yr Hello I have yet another set of questions to ask everyone. Feel free to move/delete this post if needed. AS most of you know I'm just starting to breed my budgies in breeder cages instead of in the colony. I've taken all of the nest boxes out of the avairy. Im going to make my current avairy into a flight cage for adult budgies. I'm also in the process of building a smaller avairy 3 m wide, 5 m long and 2 m high. This avairy will be used for baby budgies until they get to about 6 months and are ready to be moved into the bigger avairy with the adults. I'm also building another avairy which will have my breeder cages in. It will take time but It should be fun. My questions are 1. At the moment I only have 2 breeder cages. One is about 1 meter long, 60 centimeters high and 60 centimers wide. And the other is about 2 meter high, 1 meter wide and 1 meter long. Which breeder cage would be the best? If they are to big would budgies be to busy flying around to breed? If they are to small they wont be able to do much and probably wouldnt breed either. So basically my question is, Which breeding cage would you choose out of the 2 I said? Thats all I can think of at the moment. Sorry for making too many topics, feel free to delete this post if needed.
July 23, 200816 yr There is no such thing as too many questions. That is what we are here for Your breeding cages are nice and large (about the size of my small aviary) and a pair of budgies would breed happily in both In fact, they are so large, you could divide the smaller one in half and the larger one into quarters and get 6 breeding cabinets out of them Edited July 23, 200816 yr by **Liv**
July 23, 200816 yr Me too I divided my large flight cage into to cage breeders But ( my hens don't like to breed like that lol ) Plenty of room you could have 3 or 4 pairs going
July 24, 200816 yr Author THanks for all the replies. I have divided the cage into 2 cages so now I have 8 breeder boxes, I bought 3 today. That is all I will need for a while. I have had alot of tame budgies and when ever I put them in the avairy they became less tame everyday. Now some of the tame budgies that I had wont even come near me anymore. Does anyone know if you tame a budgie from baby stages and release him/her to the colony, Wil they stay tame? Or will they just become like all the other birds and fly around like crazy when ever I enter the avairy. THanks for your help EDit: I have read that a cage for one budgie should be no smaller than 18 by 18 by 18 (im assuming its inches) Does anyone know what the minimum size for a breeder cage for 2 budgies would be? Thanks again all Edited July 24, 200816 yr by pearce
July 24, 200816 yr Breeding cage for two budgies should be no smaller than 20 inches wide by 14 inches deep and 16 inches high. Nestbox to the outside.

It will never be as wild as the un-tamed budgies, but it will gradually loose its bond to you and become a bird rather than a person. But in saying that. You should be able to re-tame your budgie after breeding, especially when breeding in a cabinet. Edited July 24, 200816 yr by **Liv**
July 24, 200816 yr Author Oh okay thanks alot. I didnt think you could tame budgies when they get older.
July 24, 200816 yr Oh okay thanks alot. I didnt think you could tame budgies when they get older. You can tame older budgies. It does take more patience and can be harder, but it is possible. Your task would be that little bit eaiser if the budgie was tamed as a baby as it would just need to be re-tamed and should remember some things
July 25, 200816 yr Author Hello I took 2 pairs of budgies out of the avairy today and put them in the breeder cages. They al have white iris rings so they are atleast 1 year old, I've had them over a year actually. They are not related. I'm going to post some pictures and hopefully you will all be able to tell me what coloured chicks they will produce. Also if you could tell me what type the adults are it would be great. THanks very much for your help everyone.
July 26, 200816 yr Hi, I think, Pair 1 Normal light green cock and Opaline Spangle light green hen Chicks may be Normal light green hens or Normal spangle hens or Normal light green cocks/split for opaline or Spangle light green cocks/split for opaline. Unless the cock is already split for opaline in which case you could get opaline hens or opaline cocks. Or unless the cock is split for cinnamon in which case you might add cinnamon to the above outcomes. Or unless the cock and hen are split for blue in which case you could substitute sky blue for the light green outcomes. Pair 2 Opaline light green cock and Opaline Spangle light green hen. Chicks should all be opaline light green with half of them being opaline spangle light green. Unless as above. Its a bit of wait and see ! Good luck
July 27, 200816 yr Author Hello all. I Have one more question I need to ask if that is okay. Is a 60 cm high by 150 cm long by 30 cm wide a big enough breeding cage? I have a book case at home that I could turn into a double breeding cage but Im just a little bit worried about the width. The nesting boxes would be on the outside. If it is to small I will have to try and extend it. THanks for your help
