Posted July 23, 200817 yr I am wondering if anyone has any handraised budgies that have been good parents, i have a hen in the aviary who i handraised but even though she is in the aviary she does not socialise much with the other birds, she is nearly 12 months old and sometimes will let one male feed her but whenever he tries more than that she gets cranky and bites him. Whenever i am in the aviary she sits on my shoulder and i have to pysically removed her to get out of the aviary. I love her colour and want to breed with her but because she was handraised will she never bond with a male budgie.
July 23, 200817 yr I know ****(Karen) has a tame bird named boris I beleive who's a good breeder Maybe PM her to ask about it all The stars are B I R D C R A Z Y :s Edited July 23, 200817 yr by KAZ
July 23, 200817 yr I have heard that aswell but i have a boy who is a good breeder he still lands on my shoulder when i go in the aviary aswell. He never leaves his girlfriend alone. Its all he wants to do!! And the eggs are always full. So i guess it just depends on the bird maybe if she is not showing signs of making friends then she may be too tame and would rather your company?
July 23, 200817 yr Try a seperate breeding cage and put her in first wit the nest box and intoduce the cock bird after a coupple of days. Out of curiosity what colour is she and what colour is the cock bird you plan to pair her with? (this will affect the colour of the babies so we may be able to advise on what colour to pair her with)
July 23, 200817 yr My understanding is that hand reared birds dont breed as well as parent raised ones do. I like Ikon's method
July 23, 200817 yr Also maybe if she is mainly bonded to you put her in a box and get someone else to tend to that pair if you can so that she doesn't see you much, that way you can try and keep her focused on her budgie partner.
July 23, 200817 yr Author I do not plan on breeding with her till the end of the year and she is a skyblue violet spangle and i would like violets from her. i do not anything suitable in my aviary to breed her with so i have to look for a male but i did not want to buy a new male and then find out she is not suitable for breeding because she was handraised. The problem is she is bonded to all humans and will sit on my kids and hubbys shoulder when they go to the aviary as well.
July 23, 200817 yr Deb, I am sure when she is ready - There will not be an issue as their instincts kick in - Just when you are ready make sure she is. Get that breeding instinct back into her Fresh food and water plenty of food . If you plan on breeding her inside place her where you have runing water near her
July 23, 200817 yr Just let her mate up with any male she wants to & when she lays, put the eggs under another hen or bin them & then put her with the male of your choice & she will go down & lay in no time,No rocket sience.
