Question, Lizzy's Nest Of Choice

Featured Replies

Hello all!

My parakeet Lizzy has been with her new mate Morgan for a while now, and has laid an egg in the past week (she might have another one, I'll have to check)

Anyway, when I saw that she was in "nesting" mode, I put the box in their cage, but she decided to make her nest on the newspaper instead. my question is, how do I clean her cage, I can't change the newspaper because her nest would be gone if I do that...She's always liked the newspaper better than the box... Do you think if I put the eggs in the box she'll ignore them? She doesn't even go in the box....

Have you had parakeets do this before?

Also, any special nutrition for her?

Thanks!

HI Sofi@How old is the Hen???Hi again, Just re read your post and it sounds like Lizzy as nested before with the newspaper As you say " She's always liked the newspaper better than the box... Or is this her first time and first egg on the floor??? She has found a nest with the newspaper do I would remove that and I would put the egg in the breeding box ( AS LONG AS SHE IS AT THE RIGHT BREEDING CONDITION ) Others with HANDS ON EXPERIENCE in this matter will reply soon :D

Is she already sitting on the egg? If she is and you move it now she might not sit on it and then you would loose that chick. Personally if she is inside the house and draft free I would put a cut down icecream container on the floor and put her egg in it so it still has an open top. The nest box should have been put in her cage a couple of weeks ago if she was trying to nest, she has nesting theire because you didn't give her a choice. You shouldbe checking her nest a couple of times a day not once or twice a week.

Thanks! I check her everyday when I give her fresh food and water, she is in the dining room next to the living room, so I can keep an eye on her all the time without disturbing her. I put the box about a week and a half before she actually laid the egg, but still didn't go in it. She has 2 eggs now, I wasn't sure if she had anymore when I posted the last message because she looked like she was ready to lay another one, but I didn't want to bother her, she laid it later that day.

She has always laid her eggs on the newspaper, only once she did in the box, but her eggs never hatched.

Her previous mate Loui had a broken wing from birth, and I think that is part of the reason her eggs wheren't fertilized, since he couldn't balance well. We'll see if that is the case, this is her first time laying eggs since her and Morgan have been put together. Lizzy is around 5 years old.

She is laying on them. even Morgan lays next to her at nap time, I think it's so sweet :D

Thank you for the replies.

Lizzie is 5. Hens shouldn't be breed after the age of 4, But I am sure the Experts will let you know of this :D

Actually Elly given that that post was done in December that would make Morgan over a year old. Lizzie may be a little on the older side but if she is healthy and coping well I would have chosen now as the best time to breed them before she got any older and now that Morgan is just old enough.

Good luck Sofia

MB if you click on the link it was just posted on the 18th, not Dec and Soph indicated yesterday he was only 7 months old, not sure what you are looking at?

Weird! At any rate after discussion with memebrs here i have put a male down to breed at 8 months. If the hen was eight months I'd be worried but if he's doing a good job I don't see any real issue.

I don't really plan to breed them, I know Lizzy is on the older side, but she lays eggs even if she is in a cage by herself (when Loui passed she still laid eggs). Of course I want them to be happy and healthy.

I really don't know exactly how old Morgan is, they never told me at the pet shop, what I know is that he wasn't a young baby because his cere was already blue and had gone through his first molt. I guessed around 6 or 7 months and I have him since May.

I thought maybe Lizzy could be a "mom" before she gets too old, She's been laying eggs all this time and never had babies. I feel bad for her, because as I said before, she lays eggs even if she has no mate, I have no idea why.

She has 4 eggs now, I'll keep you posted.
