Posted July 19, 200816 yr Here's a New picture of Captain Morgan. He and Lizzy are official now. have been living in the same cage for a while and get along great. He is a little more skittish with me :hap: But loves Lizzy. Lizzy is laying eggs at the moment, he has been so attentive with her, he even lays next to her and takes naps with her in the afternoon. I haven't seen them mate, but I saw them flirting A LOT with each other. Anyway, here is Morgan while I took them out the other day, it was a beautiful day so they were out on the back porch for a while
July 19, 200816 yr Awwww Very cute - You should enter him in Budgie Of the Month Competition ... Where is Lizzy laying her eggs??? and How many eggs
July 21, 200816 yr Author Thank you!!! I'm not sure how old he is I think he is about 7 or 8 months. Lizzy is laying her eggs on the bottom of the cage on the newspaper, this has been her place of choice for a while now, even though she has a box she won't go in it. She has 2 eggs so far.
July 21, 200816 yr You may find that these eggs, are infertile too - As Lizzie is 5 and your cock is 7 months Old ?? But he is nice
July 21, 200816 yr Why are you letting them breed he is too young to be breeding at this time, did I miss something? You are putting your hen in danger of being egg bound. Please remove the eggs and stop the prcoess, others may have a different of opinion but this is mine.
July 21, 200816 yr Please make sure they have a calcium supplement in their water at all times - this will reduce the chances of egg binding. I agree Morgan is too young. Lizzy is a bit on the old side too but the pet types tend to be hardier than the show types and i have known a number of pet type hens to breed happily into their 7's. Is this her first clutch??? As neat mentioned, the eggs will most likely be clear because of Morgan's young age.
July 22, 200816 yr I think in your excitement you have put a cock down to breed that is way too young. It is the responsibility of you, their carer, to try an prevent breeding until they are at least a year old and no older than 4 years for a hen. In doing so, you encouraged them to breed and at ages where they are not up to raising chicks. Edited July 22, 200816 yr by KAZ
July 24, 200816 yr I have replied your posts on the breeding help forum... I really don't know what else to do, Lizzy lays eggs even if she is in the cage by herself. she's been doing this for years and never had babies. She is a very healthy bird. I got Morgan so she could have company she was not happy by herself and is a lot happier now that she has a friend.... I was just trying to get some help....
July 24, 200816 yr I'm pretty sure that there was a member that use to have a bird that layed eggs a lot.Have you asked about her egg laying?I'm sure these guys would be able to help with advice about it.Don't be scared off,we are only trying to help you.
July 25, 200816 yr okay lets start for the top again. Your hen is about 5 years old and has always laid eggs right? If so make sure she has plenty of Calcium in her diet. Also make sure that you restrict certain veggies as they will stop the calcium doing it's thing (can someone else post a list of veggies that stop calcium from being asorbed) If she is a egg layer then there are a few things you can do. Try getting some fake eggs that way you can leave them in the box/cage with her and hopefully will stop her from producing more. I would also remove the nest box from her cage, I know she nests on the floor but at least this will hopefully change thing up a bit. Also change around her cage every few days to a week, rotate toys in and out, keep her so busy on exporing all the new fun things she has that she does not have time to think about laying eggs. This may or may not work but for a few bucks might be worth a try. Any other tips from other breeders to help stop a hen from laying? Now your cock is about 7 months right? So he is to young to be a father so if you have a ability how about putting them in cages side by side. Then you can take them out of the cage for time together just make sure that no funny stuff goes on . That way they can still be friends but hopefully you will not end up with a toy boy as a dad and a granny as a mum. In about 4 or 5 months when he is older and if the hen has stopped laying eggs then if you want you could put them back together and monitor the situation. Another handy hint is if she likes laying eggs on the bottom of the cage try her in a cage with a grate on the bottom, most hens do not like sitting on this and will not lay eggs on it. try and remove anything that looks like a nest. This may or may not help but it's a start. Please keep us updated with process. Also remember calcium calcium calcium for your hen it's the most important thing.

July 25, 200816 yr Thank you for the advice! Where would I get the fake eggs? When she gets tired of laying on the eggs she brakes them (usually about 3-4 weeks after she lays them), I read in a book that I should let her be with her eggs as much as she wants and if she wants to crack them it is good for the calcium. is this correct? I have a cuddle bone at all times in her cage and she loves it. She eats from it everyday and sometimes she also puts it in her water. Would this be enough or should I get her some for her water? As far as toys I have a box full of them, I rotate them often, but she doesn't play with them unfortunatley. I wish she would, she has so many. Morgan only plays with a little mirror that has clock arms and 2 bells, he loves that one, but he won't play with the others. I was thinking about the crate bottom, this cage didn't come with one, but I am looking for a new cage. I cannot seem to find the right size, they are either too small or too big, but I'll keep looking! Thanks so much for the advice! I liked the "toy boy" part, and the granny mom lol!
