Posted July 19, 200816 yr I offered a few of my birds to someone today and got to pick a show type pair in return. I only had about five minutes to pick them so I hope I did okay. They are both opaline and the hen is a grey wing, I didn't really want a greywing but he didn't have any other hens that jumped out at me, I think she is a little long in the flights but he is a good length so hoping for better flighted chicks. He has a fairly clear head but is a little dark acros the V so I got the hen that was nice and clear across her head and V to complement his colouring. I hope I made the right choice there.
July 19, 200816 yr Show wise i wouldnt know if you did well. But budige wise - They look great - the male is huge!!!!
July 19, 200816 yr Author The male jumped out at me because he kinda reminded me of the bird on the budgie club drawing, with the narrow hips and the broad chest. He likes to sit up on the perch and just look beautiful, typical super model stuff
July 19, 200816 yr Like Liv wouldn't have a clue in regards to showing but I must say that your boy is stunning. The hen looks very pretty as well
July 19, 200816 yr I do like the cock but think he might be a little long on the body but then again I am new at this so will have to see what people like Kaz and daz say!
July 19, 200816 yr Author Whare are they anyway? Fancy not being glued to their computers on a Saturday night just to answer peoples questions
July 19, 200816 yr Whare are they anyway? Fancy not being glued to their computers on a Saturday night just to answer peoples questions Unlike us hehe
July 19, 200816 yr The cock bird is nice , he carries well above the perch and has a pretty good outline , width of mask is there , could probably have more over the top of the head , but still a lovely bird. The hen , well okay but really lacking in width of head and frontal rise , her outline could be better , but some birds that dont posess the show features can breed some champions , and if she is a good mother then what more could you ask for . Goodluck with them
July 19, 200816 yr Author LB, I don't HAVE to put him with this hen, as I said I was a little low on choices for hens. What would be the criteria for a good match for him do you think?
July 19, 200816 yr MB he might go well with my girl Lucky If you want to borrow her in the next few months give me a yell. Harley seems to have taken a dislike to her so now they don't talk. I also think she might be a bit young even though the breeder said she was ready to breed I am having second thoughts so maybe at the start of next year if you want you can borrow her for a bit.
July 19, 200816 yr LB, I don't HAVE to put him with this hen, as I said I was a little low on choices for hens. What would be the criteria for a good match for him do you think? I would pair too the biggest normal hen you have got
July 19, 200816 yr I don't know much about the features and such but I always know as LB says breed with the normals they bring out the best of the bird. Your grey green opaline cock is my favorite as well.
July 19, 200816 yr Author A normal hey, BUGGER, I picked an opaline hen thinking that's what I should do, he had some much better normal hens. Ah well, ya win some ya loose some, my fault for nt asking him either
July 19, 200816 yr He's very nice MB. I agree with everything LB said. Also best to not pair opaline to opaline, but to a normal. Best of luck with them anyway
July 19, 200816 yr Author okay well I will have to pick out a different hen for him, might give the bloke a call and ask him if I can change my mind
July 19, 200816 yr okay well I will have to pick out a different hen for him, might give the bloke a call and ask him if I can change my mind See if he has a nice large cinnamon grey normal hen
July 19, 200816 yr Author Cinnamon grey hey, is that your recommendation? I think he did have a cinni grey but she was pet type not show type. He might have a big grey normal or a grey green normal though... I'll have to see what he'll part with. It might cost me about $40 though, worth it do you think if I can find nice hen?
July 19, 200816 yr Why not try a different breeder , A new gene pool , them work the families together. I would look for a green or blue , doubling up on grey and greygreen will start to wash out the colour and you end up with a patchy grey green where the colours start to seperate
July 19, 200816 yr She's a cinnwing opaline hen by the way Her wings are definatly brown, i have a nice pet type cock exactly the same
July 19, 200816 yr Author Will have a bit more of a look at the birds and also talk to some breeders at the club on Thursday. I know he had quite a few birds that came from other breeders so I might be able to check the rings and get something fom someone else anyway.
July 19, 200816 yr I have No idea with Show budgies :hap: but my constructive comment is not have them in your Kitchen Edited July 19, 200816 yr by Neat
July 22, 200816 yr Be patient for the right bird,Gregwing are nice birds but to start with normal, cinnamon & opaline are the way to go.just a little advise with show birds be patient. Steve
July 22, 200816 yr Author I'm not using that hen anymore, I have found a nice green normal for him. I will be putting that girl with a big syblue yellowface normal.
