Posted July 19, 200816 yr Hello all Sorry for making another post. I bought a budgie from a local breeder and he says the budgie is male but i'm not sure So im posting here. He/she looks to be female but I'm not sure as some males always have pink ceres. Heres some photos (yes im no good at taking pictures, the budgies always fly away when I get close enough to get a good photo) http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/597/p1010041wp3.jpg http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/7960/p1010043am0.jpg http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/621/p1010048yq2.jpg The breeder said he is old enough to breed, Is he? I was told he/she is a lutino but I cant see the red eyes. Thanks very much for your help.
July 19, 200816 yr It's a recessive pied not a lutino, but it is a cock I'm not sure on age, looks still young to me though.
July 19, 200816 yr Author okay thanks very much I also got this budgie, is she in breeding condition? http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/9320/p1010055nj8.jpg http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3227/p1010057tx5.jpg http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/5034/p1010058tt1.jpg How old is she and is she in breeding condition? Thanks alot for your help

Thanks alot for your help She is too young Pearce...around 5-7 months old maybe.
July 19, 200816 yr Author Darn... Well I still need to quarentine them both anyway as I just got them yesterday. Can I keep them in the same cage and just remove the nesting box? THanks
July 19, 200816 yr If they're from the same place that is okay to quarantine them together, if not they need to be seperated
July 19, 200816 yr Darn...Well I still need to quarentine them both anyway as I just got them yesterday. Can I keep them in the same cage and just remove the nesting box? THanks You jumped the gun putting them in a breeding cage as you only just got them. Stress equals illness....always remember that ... new birds go into holding cages and only into breeding cages if you bought a ready to breed pair from one breeder.
July 19, 200816 yr Author They are in the quarentine cage But Usually if I get a pair from the one place and i'm told they are in breeding condition I put a nesting box in the cage. They arent in my breeding cages though... She told me they were 1 1/2 years and older... Sorry... I just have one more pair of budgies I need some information on and then I will not bother you all again. I've had these 2 budgies for over a year and I bred them myself. Do they look in condition to you? Are they old enough? http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/2536/p1010008id1.jpg http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/4493/p1010012xf0.jpg http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/9286/p1010013ie6.jpg http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/6919/p1010020fp2.jpg Also, what type of budgies are they if you can tell. Thanks.
July 19, 200816 yr You arent a bother Pearce....we all have to ask questions to get answers. If you bred that pair and had them for over a year, then you already have answered your own question about their age. They look fine to breed with. She is a green opaline spangle and he is a green opaline. :hap:
July 19, 200816 yr Author okay thanks. I was just making sure just incase They were both males or somthing and I put them together for 3 weeks... From what I've read, its possible to tell a Budgies age by the ring around its eye, No ring means under 4 months, greyish ring means 4 months to 8 months and white ring means 8 months and older. The pair that I bought before the holidays (about 3 weeks ago) are going well. I read that after 3 weeks in a breeder cage and they arent doing anything you should take them out and put them back in the avairy. Im not going to do that as they are just become fond of eachother and the female sits in the nesting box all day. She layed one egg and I was so happy but the next day I came out and it was gone. I dont really know what could have happened. If she had eaten/threw the egg out their would be eggshells and the sort everywhere. Thanks for your time.
July 19, 200816 yr Young and silly hens can eat eggs, and so can the cock birds but its mostly hens. Also mice can get in and eat eggs, so check for that. Good luck with everything
July 19, 200816 yr one that I wanted to express about breeding condition is that because they go into a breeding condition state around 4-6 months doesn't mean that they are mentally ready to breed, just like young women at 14y (they can get pregnant but it doesn't mean they should), you have received good advice. Your birds are beautiful.
July 21, 200816 yr Author Hello all. I have a few more questions to ask, feel free to answer them. My camera is not working at the moment so i'm going to give a description of one of my budgies and I need to confirm that he is definitly male. He is pure white, he does not have red eyes. He has a big head and his cere is bright pink. He is always on top and in the nesting box with one of my females ( she has layed 4 eggs). Is he definitly a male? Some of my other male birds have pink ceres aswell.. He is not albino. What type could he be? Can you tell? If you cant answer this question I will re post it again in a few days with pictures. I have 1 pair of budgies in the breeder cage they've been in their for 4 weeks. 4 days ago the hen layed an egg in the nest box and the next day it was gone. Now she layed another egg today, this time the egg has blood all over it. Does that mean she isnt getting enough nutrients to lay? Is she stressed? THanks very much for your time
July 21, 200816 yr It's a recessive pied not a lutino, but it is a cock I'm not sure on age, looks still young to me though. All feel free to jump on me but isnt he/she standing a little wide to be a male .A male i would expect to stance to be a little closer together. remember im a old guy and my eye sight isnt the best, and i do scare easy so be kind to me when u tell me im wrong Moderator’s Message please do not use unapproved shortcuts such as (u = you), thank you Edited July 21, 200816 yr by Elly
July 21, 200816 yr If there is blood on the egg, she has obviously had some trouble passing it. Ensure that there is calcivet in her water or her seed. If she does not get enough clacium, he results for the next egg may be worse. The white bird, pink cere but black eyes might be a double factor dominant pied. I do nto hink a Double Factor spangle as then he would have a blue cere. Some DF dominant pieds have very little markings. If you have one with very little markings as at all, that is my guess. I have to say, you seem ever so eager to breed your birds. I do understand that, breeding is an exciting time and the thrill of what can be produced is awesome, however do not rush into it just for the sake of the breeding itself. You seem a little over eager to me. Enthusiasm is a grea thing, but take it slowly.
July 21, 200816 yr Author I have bred budgies before but it was colony style only. I have never selected a pair and put them in a seperate cage and bred that way before. The reason i'm asking so many questions is because I dont want anything to go wrong, Even if it does I will know what to do. I'm sorry for asking so many questions, everyone here must think im stupid. Before I even got budgies a few years ago I borrowed out alot of books and read them all so I was prepared. I am still learning alot but I know alot more about budgies now than I did 3 years ago.
July 21, 200816 yr What color feet does the White one have???? If they are Blue it is a Double factor
July 21, 200816 yr What color feet does the White one have????If they are Blue it is a Double factor Neat I think you mean his cere not his feet . If he has a blue cere then he would be a Double Factor Spangle If he has a pink cere then he would be a Dark Eyed Clear
July 25, 200816 yr Author Hello I did not want to bother you all by making another post as It can be considered spam. I do ask alot of questions. I'm just wondering how you all learnt the budgie mutations. I've been reading alot of topics on this forum and other sites. So Far I've figured out the colours (Grey, Green, Mauve, Cobalt.. Etc etc) But which colours are dominant over which. Like if a blue budgie breeds with a green budgie, dont all the babies become green as green is the dominant colour? (I'm not sure). How do you all find this info on what colours are dominant over what. I understand most of the types aswell (spangle, Cinamon, Clearwing) I want to learn all this so I dont have to make posts every time I want to know the mutation of my budgies. And I also read that baby males will always be different colours than baby females, Like if a blue and a green bred together all males would be green and all females would be blue... Is this right? Also, If two of the exact same type of budgies bred together (2 light green opalines) Would the babies all be the exact same mutation as the parents? Seen as their is no other colours on the parents themselves? I am going to keep reading and hopefully I will understand all this some day... THanks very much for all the help
July 25, 200816 yr Can't only go by Cere sometimes, i have a DF spangle with a pink CereDoes he have iris rings too?We all learn from others like you are learning but a Website I used to use is having issues at the time but there is a PINNED Website under our Mutation Section that you can start to learn about them done by our member Ravengyspy.

Here is a link to a mating expectations table which might also help answer some of your qustions ----> HERE
