Posted July 17, 200816 yr Hi, I had Bert out in my room this morning. We were doing fine until he decided he'd had enough, and flew back into his cage. This flying back into the cage has become a bit of a habit, so I decided to remove the cage from the room. I did this, and saw an amazing improvement! After a few minutes Bert was like a different bird. He willingly flew to my hand a couple of times, then proceeded to climb up and down my arms, even sitting on my shoulder! I was able to move about the room with Bert on my hand without him flying away- something I hadn't been able to do previously. He eagerly explored the room without a hint of fear. Just thought I'd share with you our improvements
July 17, 200816 yr Thats great news I have found its easier to get birds to trust and notice you if you either cover their cage or work with them in a different room (or remove it like you did). Theyre not so distracted by their "security".
July 17, 200816 yr Yeah , and What are great photo - Perfect for Bugie of the Month Thanks for sharing
July 17, 200816 yr That is wonderful, I had to do the same thing with Pretty he always went back to his cage too.
July 18, 200816 yr Author Thanks for all your replies. Bert and I just had another great taming session, he's improving a little each day
July 18, 200816 yr That's fantastic! I bet you are pleased with your progress. It does take time, but a little each day and you'll get there. Way to go
July 18, 200816 yr What a cute budgie. Glad to hear your training is coming along so well. Is there a particular behaviour you would love to train Bert to do in the future?
July 18, 200816 yr Author I am very pleased :hap: LisaVenn, I'd really just like him to be comfortable out of his cage with the rest of my family. I envy my friends that have tame birds flying about their homes. Edited July 18, 200816 yr by Bert:)
July 18, 200816 yr By the progress you are making your friends will envy you because your bird is tamer than theirs :hap:
July 18, 200816 yr Agree with Liv ... And you have US here at BBC to help you and guide you so that your friends will be more Envious :hap:
July 18, 200816 yr I agree with the statement above, I used to be envious of some of the members and their tame birds but Merlin came around wonderfully, every bird tames at a different rate and it is due to their personality plus what type of up bringing they had in their first few weeks of life.
