Beak Build Up

Featured Replies

Posted

My daughters pet budgerigar has a lumpy growth in the area between where the beak ends and the head feathers begins. The lumpy growth is a whitish to light brown colour. There is also some white build up on the beak of the bird.

Does anyone know what this may be and if or how it can be cured.

Cheers.

If you can post a photo that would be a great help.

The part of the budgies beak you are referring to is called the cere, it is the fleshy part around the budgies nostrils.

The white build up on the beak would be scaly face, which is little mites that burrow into the skin and beak area creating a white crust and a flaky look. It is completely treatable, but left untreated will cause the beak to deform.

Sounds like the budgie has scalyface. Can be treated by spot on ivermectin from the vet, or by daily rubbing oil into the area making sure to avoid the nostrils.
